The FTII, located in Pune and renowned for nurturing top talent in film and television, confirmed on Tuesday that it has extended the last date for applying to its flagship mid-2025 admission session. The film course, highly sought after for its alumni network and industry connections, now allows prospective students additional time to complete their application submissions.
“The deadline extension is in response to several requests from aspirants and changes in academic schedules nationwide. Our aim is to ensure that deserving talents from diverse backgrounds have ample opportunity to apply,” said FTII Director, Bhupendra Kainthola, in the official statement.
Revised Deadlines: New Window for Aspiring Filmmakers
Originally slated to close on June 15, 2024, the application window will now remain open until July 5, 2024. This extension applies to all diploma and certificate courses beginning in mid-2025, including Direction & Screenplay Writing, Cinematography, Sound Recording & Sound Design, and Editing.
Applicants can submit their forms online via the FTII official website. All eligibility criteria, entrance examination patterns, and other details remain unchanged.
Why the Extension? Factors Influencing FTII’s Decision
Booming Interest and Overlapping Timelines
FTII sources cited an uptick in queries and incomplete applications, particularly among final-year undergraduates whose university timelines were delayed due to exam rescheduling. With the COVID-19 pandemic having previously disrupted academic calendars, the institute recognized the need to accommodate shifting schedules.
“For many students, especially those in their final year, the overlap of exam results and application deadlines posed a significant challenge,” said an FTII admissions official who requested anonymity. “The extension ensures these students do not miss out due to factors beyond their control.”
Widening Access to India’s Film Industry
India’s entertainment sector, currently valued at over $24 billion (FICCI-EY, 2024), has undergone rapid digital transformation and diversification. The demand for formally trained professionals in filmmaking, editing, and related domains is at an all-time high.
“FTII plays a crucial role in preparing candidates for the evolving demands of Indian and global cinema,” noted film critic and FTII alumnus, Namrata Joshi. “Flexibility in admissions supports a wider talent pool and maintains the institute’s relevance.”
