Karan Johar Opens Up About Travel Anxiety
Filmmaker Karan Johar recently shared his personal experiences with travel anxiety in a heartfelt Instagram post, striking a chord with many anxious flyers across the country. From obsessively checking his boarding pass to staying on edge during turbulence, Johar’s account is equal parts humorous and relatable.
The Pre-Flight Rituals
KJo revealed that his pre-flight routine is almost a full-scale operation. Even before leaving for the airport, anxiety kicks in. He admitted to reaching the airport well before the ground staff arrive, checking his passport and boarding pass multiple times, and mentally preparing for the journey ahead.
He wrote, “First I have a desperate need to reach the airport early (sometimes even before the ground staff have arrived). Then in the lounge, I check my passport and my boarding card 50 times.”
This obsessive attention to detail is something many frequent travelers instantly recognize, making Johar’s confession highly relatable.
Anxiety in the Air
Once onboard, Karan’s nervousness continues. He waits for the pilot to announce the flight duration and monitor weather updates carefully. A “smooth ride” allows him to relax, while any mention of “a few bumps” puts him immediately on alert.
He shared, “Then right through the duration, I wait at the edge of the seat for those expected bumps. I check the map every 10 minutes on a short haul flight. On a long haul, I pop a pill and pray for sleep (subconscious mind is always turbulence aware).”
Being Extra Polite to the Crew
Interestingly, Johar admits his anxiety makes him the politeest passenger on board. He goes out of his way to smile and thank the cabin crew, joking, “In case of an emergency, they will be kind to the kind. I smile like a Colgate ad and say thank you at every given point of time.”
This unusual coping mechanism shows how people channel nervous energy into positive behaviors, even in stressful situations.
Social Media Resonates With KJo’s Story
Johar’s post quickly drew a wave of responses from followers who shared their own pre-flight anxieties. Many admitted to similar rituals: checking boarding passes repeatedly, counting seconds until landing, or staying hyper-alert for turbulence.
One user commented, “Karan, it’s totally natural to feel the way you do. Safe travels!” Another said, “It’s me, me, me. I have next-level severe air travel anxiety. I count every second to touch my feet to the ground. I feel you.”
The post sparked a broader discussion on travel-related stress and anxiety, highlighting that even celebrities deal with everyday fears.

While navigating the skies may be stressful, KJo is also busy professionally. He is currently producing Naagzilla, starring Kartik Aaryan, and looking forward to the release of his next film, Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, featuring Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday.
