Indian Railways Hikes Fares Slightly, Updates Ticket Prices

The updated fare structure affects all passengers traveling on Mail/Express, Shatabdi, Rajdhani, and certain suburban trains. According to the Railways, the average increase ranges from 2% to 4%, translating to approximately ₹10 to ₹50 more per ticket for most intercity journeys. The fare adjustments are applicable to both reserved and unreserved travel classes.

Railways officials emphasized that suburban and short-distance local train fares remain largely unchanged to minimize the impact on daily commuters. “We have ensured that this modest fare adjustment does not burden the common man, especially those relying on suburban and short-distance trains,” said Smt. Manju Gupta, PRO, Indian Railways.

Reasons Behind the Fare Hike

The fare revision is attributed to several factors: rising fuel and maintenance costs, increased expenditure on safety upgrades, and the introduction of modern facilities in new trains such as Vande Bharat Express. The Railways is currently executing an ambitious network modernization program, including electrification, station redevelopment, and the procurement of energy-efficient coaches.

“With fuel prices and input costs seeing a sharp rise since 2022, this adjustment is necessary to ensure uninterrupted, safe, and quality services for our passengers,” an official press release stated.

Comparisons with Previous Fare Revisions

This fare hike is the first such increase since January 2022, when Indian Railways had marginally adjusted prices after the COVID-19 lockdowns. Compared to previous jumps, the 2024 revision is considered moderate. Railways data shows that Indian fares remain among the lowest per kilometer in the world, despite extensive infrastructure upgrades in recent years.

Impact on Commuters & Industry Response

While the Railways seeks to reassure travelers about the modest impact of the hike, commuters expressed mixed reactions. Daily traveler Ramesh Singh, who commutes from Kanpur to Lucknow for work, voiced concerns: “Even a small increase affects our monthly budgets. I hope services and cleanliness improve as fares go up.”

Railway unions and industry experts have largely welcomed the move, citing it as overdue. “This hike is necessary given the unparalleled scale of maintenance and security improvements being implemented,” said Dr. N. Krishnamurthy, transportation economist at IIT Delhi. He added, “Periodic, moderate fare revisions are globally recognized as best practice for state-run railways.”

Railway’s Assurance on Service Improvements

The Railways has pledged to use additional revenue to enhance passenger amenities, bolster safety, and expand digital ticketing services. “Passengers will experience measurable improvements in punctuality, station cleanliness, and onboard services over the coming months,” Railways Chairman Jaya Verma Sinha stated during a press briefing.

How the New Fares Break Down

Sleeper class: Increases by ₹10-15 for journeys over 300 km.

AC Chair/3-Tier: Hikes of ₹25-40 on key intercity sectors.

Rajdhani/Shatabdi: Marginal increase, averaging ₹30 per ticket on long-haul routes.

Suburban/local trains: No increase for over 60% of routes.

Ticketing portals and counters are already reflecting the revised prices as of June 18.

Context: India’s Massive Rail Network

Serving over 23 million passengers daily, Indian Railways is the world’s fourth-largest network, critical for national mobility and economic activity. The railways operate over 12,000 trains daily, linking urban to rural communities across 7,300+ stations.

Public Consultation and Next Steps

The Ministry has invited feedback from stakeholders and the public via its website and social media handles. An official review will be conducted after three months, to assess the impact and consider further adjustments if needed.
