In a pathbreaking effort to bridge India’s remotest border regions’ development divide, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Ministry of Home Affairs are launching the Viksit Vibrant Villages Programme. To be conducted from May 15 through May 30, 2025, the ambitious programme intends to change the lives of citizens in some of the remotest villages of Leh-Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
Inspired by the passion and dedication of 500 MY Bharat volunteers, the program is set to empower communities through youth participation, community development, and cultural promotion, establishing the groundwork for a more inclusive and affluent India.
Empowering Youth Through Volunteerism
At the core of the Viksit Vibrant Villages Program is the energy of India’s youth. Five hundred volunteers, specially chosen from throughout the country, will work in tandem with residents in 100 specially selected villages. The MY Bharat volunteers will serve as agents of change, transferring their passion and imagination to drive sustainable development.
Their tasks are diverse — offering education assistance to village children, supporting infrastructure development projects, and raising healthcare awareness among the villagers. By enabling knowledge sharing and local capacity development, the volunteers will ensure that border communities thrive in the environments they create.
Registration for the program opened on April 23, 2025, on the MY Bharat Portal, and it drew young changemakers who were keen to contribute to nation-building. The selection process was framed to ensure regional diversity, with 10 volunteers from Union Territories and 15 from each of the participating states. This eclectic mix will not only create a rich exchange of ideas but also strengthen the sense of unity and common purpose across various regions of India.
Community Development Programmes
The Viksit Vibrant Villages Programme is carefully designed to have maximum impact. For two weeks, daily activities will concentrate on defined areas of community development. Volunteers will initiate an array of programmes, including:
Community Mobilization: Facilitating participatory governance and local leadership.
Youth Leadership Training: Empowering young inhabitants to become change agents and think bigger.
Healthcare Awareness Campaigns: Fostering hygiene, preventive healthcare, and well-being.
Skill Development Workshops: Imparting new vocational skills to create employment opportunities for the local population.
Ecological Protection Initiatives: Encouraging sustainable practices like waste management and plantation drives.
Also, physical activities such as sports competitions, yoga classes, and meditation workshops will be arranged to encourage wholesome wellness. The volunteers and residents will also engage in creative outlets through open mic, storytelling, and discussions revolving around the inspiring topic of “My Dream India.”
These activities will not only create capabilities and consciousness but will also foster a sense of pride and ownership within the villagers. Volunteers will be reporting back on their experience, relating inspiring tales and best practices that will serve to amplify the voices of these dynamic yet frequently voiceless communities.
Redefining Border Villages
Long seen as faraway and inaccessible, India’s border villages are on the cusp of a new narrative. The Viksit Vibrant Villages Program seeks to redefine them as vibrant hubs of culture, innovation, and adaptability. By highlighting their distinctive heritage — from language and customs to design and cuisine — the program will present the richness these villages add to India’s national identity.
The project foresees these villages not only as strategic bases but as “cultural beacons” that make a positive contribution to India’s overall mission of becoming a developed country by 2047.
Through sustained youth engagement, the program aims to break down stereotypes and create bridges of national unity and mutual respect. Through education, entrepreneurship, or governance, the youth will contribute to self-sufficiency and sustainable development in these areas. This dynamic collaboration between young Indians and border communities will make the nation’s fabric stronger, more resilient, and richer in culture.
Orientation and Training for Volunteers
One of the most important elements of the Viksit Vibrant Villages Program is the orientation and training of the chosen volunteers. Volunteers will undergo an intensive orientation program in Delhi prior to leaving for their individual villages.
During the training, they will be taught the necessary skills, which are:
Leadership and Teamwork Development
Understanding Rural Realities
Effective Community Engagement Techniques
Basic Healthcare and Education Advocacy
The goal is to make every volunteer as fully qualified as possible to face the hurdles of rural-based work but impact positively.
Via this simulation-learning experience, the volunteers not only will make contributions to reviving villages but have personal and professional development opportunities for improving their leadership skills as well as broadening their passion towards national service.
A Catalyst for Change
The Viksit Vibrant Villages Program is not merely a development program — it is a movement that aims to integrate the aspirations and dreams of India’s border communities into the country’s overall development process. Through empowering young citizens to play active roles in these changes, the program emphasizes the notion that any village, however isolated, has the potential to shine.
As the country gears up to Viksit Bharat@2047, the Viksit Vibrant Villages Programme is a beacon of what collective effort, youth participation, and cultural confidence can achieve. It not only commits to enriching the border regions but also aims to bring back a fresh wave of patriotism and oneness among the country.
