Mughal ‘Prince’ Seeks UN’s Help to Protect Aurangzeb’s Tomb After Nagpur Violence

Descendant of Bahadur Shah Zafar Urges UN to Act as Protests Escalate Against Mughal Legacy in India

Hyderabad:
A man claiming to be a descendant of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, has written to the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, seeking immediate protection of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Maharashtra, amid growing protests and demands for its removal.

This comes nearly a month after violent clashes broke out in Nagpur, where demonstrators called for the removal of the tomb, which lies in Kuldabad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district (formerly known as Aurangabad).

Who Is the Man Behind the UN Plea?

Yakub Habeebuddin Tucy Claims Mughal Lineage

The letter was written by Yakub Habeebuddin Tucy, who refers to himself as a “Prince” and a descendant of the Mughal dynasty. Tucy claims lineage from Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last emperor of the Mughal empire who was exiled by the British after the 1857 revolt.

Tucy also claims to be the Mutawalli (caretaker) of the Waqf property on which the 17th-century Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb is located.

He alleges that the tomb is under threat due to growing communal tensions, misinformation, and political agitation, and has asked the UN to intervene to ensure its preservation as a piece of India’s cultural heritage.

Why Is Aurangzeb’s Tomb Under Threat?

Rally Sparks Violence in Nagpur Over Mughal Legacy

On March 17, a rally in Nagpur turned violent after certain groups demanded the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb, arguing that glorifying the Mughal emperor, often seen as controversial, was disrespectful.

The rally soon escalated into stone-pelting and unrest, with allegations of a holy book being desecrated, further fueling anger.
As of now, 92 people have been arrested in connection with the violence.

This unrest seems to be part of a larger narrative, where historical figures like Aurangzeb are being re-examined through a modern political lens, often causing division and debate.

Tucy’s Letter: A Plea for Legal and Cultural Protection

Monument of National Importance, Says Mughal Heir

In his letter, Tucy emphasized that Aurangzeb’s tomb is legally protected as a “Monument of National Importance” under India’s Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.

“As per the Act, any unauthorized destruction, alteration, or excavation at or near such monuments is illegal and punishable,” he wrote.

Tucy expressed concern that misinformation via films, social media, and news outlets has distorted historical narratives, inciting hate campaigns and symbolic acts like effigy burning and demands for removal.

UNESCO and International Laws Cited

Heritage Conservation Is a Global Responsibility, He Says

Tucy reminded the United Nations that India is a signatory to the 1972 UNESCO Convention on World Cultural and Natural Heritage, which obligates countries to protect historical monuments and sites for future generations.

“Any neglect or destruction of such sites would be a violation of India’s international obligations,” Tucy’s letter stated.

He urged the UN Secretary-General to instruct the Indian central government and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to ensure protection, legal preservation, and physical security of Aurangzeb’s tomb.

The Historical Significance of Aurangzeb’s Tomb

A Minimalist Burial Chosen by the Emperor Himself

Aurangzeb, who ruled India from 1658 to 1707, chose to be buried in a simple grave in Kuldabad, next to his spiritual teacher. The tomb stands out for its austerity, contrasting the grandeur of Mughal monuments like the Taj Mahal.

It is a protected ASI site and attracts a mix of historians, tourists, and pilgrims. Despite this, Aurangzeb remains a deeply polarizing figure in Indian history, often debated for his religious policies and military campaigns.

The Larger Cultural Debate: History vs Modern Politics

A Call for Balanced Historical Understanding

The controversy over Aurangzeb’s tomb is part of a broader discussion in India about how Mughal history should be remembered. While some view emperors like Aurangzeb as oppressors, others insist that their monuments and legacies are vital parts of Indian heritage.

Yakub Tucy’s appeal raises important questions:

  • Should historical monuments be judged by today’s political standards?

  • Can cultural heritage be preserved while acknowledging painful chapters of history?

What Happens Next?

Will the UN Intervene or Stay Silent?

It is unclear whether the United Nations will act on Tucy’s letter, as heritage protection usually falls under national jurisdiction. However, the plea brings international attention to the increasing politicization of history in India.

Meanwhile, the ASI and government authorities may be pushed to reaffirm the site’s protected status, especially if more unrest arises.

A Tomb in Turmoil, A Nation Debating Its Past

Aurangzeb’s tomb, a modest resting place of one of India’s most debated rulers, has become the center of a modern cultural and political battle.

Whether one sees the Mughal legacy as oppressive or historic, the call for preservation under law and international norms shines a light on the tension between history, heritage, and modern-day identity in India.

As India continues to grow and redefine itself, its relationship with the past—monuments included—may determine how inclusive, informed, and tolerant its future becomes.
