High-Level Defence Meeting After Pakistan’s Surprise Attacks

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh urgently met with Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan and the three armed service chiefs on Friday morning in New Delhi. The meeting came just hours after Pakistan launched a fresh wave of missile and drone attacks targeting Indian military installations and several civilian cities across multiple states.

The attacks marked a dramatic escalation in India-Pakistan tensions, following the Indian Army’s earlier cross-border missile strikes under Operation Sindoor. These operations were carried out in response to the deadly April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of several Indian security personnel.

What Happened Last Night

Pakistan’s Coordinated Attack Across Borders

According to sources in the Indian Army, Pakistan launched coordinated strikes across multiple sectors late Thursday night. The targets included military stations at:

  • Jammu

  • Pathankot

  • Udhampur

Pakistani forces also fired missiles and drones into civilian and military zones in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Punjab, beginning around 8:30 PM. Several areas, including Srinagar, Jammu, and key cities in Punjab and Rajasthan, experienced large-scale blackouts during the assault.

Ceasefire Violations at the LoC

Simultaneously, Pakistani troops committed multiple ceasefire violations (CFVs) along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

 India’s Swift and Powerful Response

Indian Army Strikes Back Hard

The Indian Army reacted immediately and decisively to Pakistan’s aggression. According to defence sources:

  • Anti-Tank Guided Missiles were used to target and destroy Pakistani military posts along the LoC.

  • A “befitting reply” was delivered to Pakistan’s ceasefire violations.

  • The drone attacks were successfully intercepted and repulsed by Indian defence systems.

Official Statement by Indian Army

“Pakistan Armed Forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other munitions along the entire Western Border… The Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Nation. All nefarious designs will be responded with force.”

 What Triggered This Flare-Up

Suspension of Indus Water Treaty

Tensions have been on the rise since India suspended the Indus Water Treaty following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which was allegedly backed by Pakistani terror groups.

India’s Operation Sindoor: The Turning Point

In a powerful counteroffensive, India launched Operation Sindoor, striking back with:

  • 24 missile strikes

  • 9 locations inside Pakistan and PoK

  • 70 terrorists killed, 60+ injured

  • All this in just 25 minutes, aimed to avoid radar detection and maximize damage.

 Pakistan’s Retaliation: Indiscriminate Shelling

Following the Operation Sindoor strikes, Pakistan responded with what India called “arbitrary and indiscriminate firing”. Heavy artillery shelling across the LoC led to tragic civilian losses:

  • At least 16 civilians killed in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indian Army has continued to retaliate firmly, ensuring such acts do not go unanswered.

 Rajnath Singh’s Emergency Defence Review

With the situation escalating, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s meeting with top military brass focused on:

  • Reviewing national security along the Western border

  • Assessing India’s preparedness for further provocations

  • Formulating strategic responses to ongoing attacks and potential escalations

India’s Stance: Sovereignty Will Be Defended

India’s official line remains clear: provocations will not be tolerated, and any threat to the nation’s sovereignty or its people will be met with force.

India’s strong military response—both in the form of precision missile strikes and anti-drone action—highlights the shift in India’s posture. It’s no longer reactive but preemptive and assertive.

 Global Implications and What’s Next

The international community is closely watching the developments between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. If the cross-border tensions continue, diplomatic interventions could follow. However, for now, India appears focused on maintaining operational readiness and deterring further aggression through military strength.

This week marks one of the most intense military escalations between India and Pakistan in recent years. With India showcasing both strategic precision and swift retaliation, it has sent a strong message: cross-border terror and military aggression will no longer be met with silence—but strength.

India’s national security leadership remains alert, and the situation along the western border is being closely monitored as the region braces for potential aftershocks from this exchange.
