Maharashtra Governor Condemns Housing Discrimination Over Caste, Religion

At a recent interfaith peace event in Mumbai, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan made a bold and emotional statement: people being denied housing based on their caste or religion is “disheartening” and must stop. Speaking at the ‘Lokmat World Peace and Harmony Through Interfaith Dialogue’ event on Tuesday, the Governor called for deep societal reforms starting from schools and families.

This high-profile event also saw powerful voices like Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, Maharashtra Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, and Lokmat Media Group Chairman Vijay Darda, all uniting for a common goal—spreading peace through respect for all religions.

Governor Radhakrishnan: Discrimination Over Housing Must End

 “It Is Disheartening”

Governor Radhakrishnan expressed shock and sadness at the ongoing discrimination in housing practices where people are refused homes due to their caste or religious background. He emphasized that in a country as diverse as India, such practices violate the spirit of unity and harmony.

“It is disheartening to hear that people are being denied housing based on caste or religion. This has to be ended once and for all,” he said.

Interfaith Dialogue: The Key to Peace and Unity

Radhakrishnan believes interfaith dialogue isn’t just a modern trend—it’s a long-standing tradition in Indian culture. By encouraging open conversations between communities, the Governor said we can bridge divides, break down prejudices, and foster shared humanity.

“World peace and harmony can be created merely by interfaith dialogue,” he asserted.

Start With Schools: Teaching Children to Respect All Faiths

The Governor laid out a clear roadmap for building a more inclusive society—start young. He said schools and colleges must be encouraged to celebrate festivals of all religions, allowing students to engage with different cultures and beliefs in a positive and joyful environment.

 Celebrate All Religions in Schools

“In the name of secularism, we are preventing our students from celebrating the festivals of all religions,” Radhakrishnan said.
“That must change if we want them to grow up respectful of all faiths.”

Parents Must Play a Role Too

The Governor also urged parents to introduce children to different places of worship—be it temples, mosques, churches, or gurudwaras. This personal exposure, he believes, is crucial for building empathy and appreciation for India’s rich religious diversity.

Arif Mohammad Khan: ‘Diversity Is India’s Strength’

Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan also addressed the gathering, bringing a spiritual and philosophical angle to the discussion.

 Accountability in Indian Culture

“In Indian culture, every act has consequences. We believe in accountability and karma,” he said.

He went on to add that Indian identity has never been about language, skin color, or faith, but about respect for diversity.

“We never said diversity weakens us. We said diversity and plurality are natural laws and must be respected.”

Vijay Darda: Peace Begins With Brotherhood

Former Rajya Sabha MP and Lokmat chairman Vijay Darda delivered a message of universal compassion. He said India must focus on brotherhood, forgiveness, and world peace to truly achieve harmony.

“We need to focus on people’s welfare, compassion, and forgiveness. That is the way to peace.”

India’s Multifaith Fabric: A Blessing, Not a Barrier

India is home to over 1.4 billion people of countless faiths, languages, and cultures. Yet, some of its biggest challenges stem from social division, especially around caste and religion. The words of leaders like Radhakrishnan and Arif Mohammad Khan are timely reminders that:

  • Secularism doesn’t mean ignoring faiths—it means respecting all.

  • Children must learn unity through celebration, not just textbooks.

  • Discrimination in any form—housing, education, or workplace—must be addressed boldly.

 Why This Matters

Housing bias, though illegal in many parts of India, remains rampant in urban and rural settings alike. People from certain communities—especially Dalits, Muslims, and Christians—often find it difficult to rent or buy property in certain localities.

This form of “silent exclusion” undermines social equality, mental health, and economic freedom. Public condemnation of such practices by top leaders like the Governor adds urgency and legitimacy to the fight against prejudice.

What Can Be Done? A Few Steps Forward

 Strengthen Anti-Discrimination Laws

Enforce housing rights with stronger legal penalties and fast-track grievance mechanisms.

 Promote Inclusive Education

Encourage multifaith festivals and cultural exchange programs in schools and colleges.

 Raise Awareness

Use social campaigns and media to change public perceptions and challenge biases.

 Empower Local Communities

Train resident welfare associations and builders to identify and stop discriminatory practices.

Time to Build a United India

Governor Radhakrishnan’s statement has reignited a crucial conversation about the invisible walls in our society. From celebrating all festivals in schools to ensuring no one is denied a home, the path to peace and harmony begins with respect, inclusion, and education.

As citizens, teachers, parents, and leaders, we all have a role to play in ensuring India’s diversity remains its greatest strength—not its biggest challenge.
