US Cancels 2,000 Visa Appointments in India Over Fraud Concerns

Massive Visa Crackdown: 2,000 Appointments Canceled

In a major crackdown on fraudulent activities, the US Embassy in India has canceled over 2,000 visa appointments after detecting unauthorized booking by bots and fixers. The embassy announced the move on X (formerly Twitter), stating that it has a zero-tolerance policy for those violating their scheduling policies.

US Embassy’s Official Statement

“Consular Team India is canceling about 2,000 visa appointments made by bots. We have zero tolerance for agents and fixers that violate our scheduling policies.”

The suspended accounts linked to these fraudulent bookings have also lost their privileges to schedule further visa appointments.

Why Were These Visa Appointments Canceled?

The B1 and B2 visas, which are meant for business and tourism, have been experiencing a significant backlog for years. The high demand has led to an increasing number of agents and unauthorized bots attempting to exploit the appointment system.

  • Bots were used to book appointments unfairly.
  • Unauthorized agents created fake accounts to secure slots.
  • Genuine applicants faced delays because of this manipulation.

What Does This Mean for Genuine Applicants?

The US Embassy’s action aims to protect genuine visa seekers by ensuring fair access to appointment slots. While this may cause further delays for some, authorities believe it will help in the long run by eliminating fraudulent interference.

The Ongoing Visa Backlog Problem

Massive Waiting Times for US Visas

The backlog for B1/B2 visas has been a growing issue, with wait times between 800 to 1,000 days in recent years. To tackle the crisis, the US even opened visa appointments for Indian applicants in Frankfurt and Bangkok.

Government’s Concern Over Delays

In 2022, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar raised concerns with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who blamed the delays on the Covid-19 pandemic. The minister reiterated these concerns in January 2024 during talks with US officials.

“If it takes 400-odd days to get a visa, I don’t think the relationship is well served by this.” – S. Jaishankar

Student Visa Rejections Hit Record High

It’s not just business and tourism visas facing trouble—student visa rejections have surged dramatically.

Key Statistics on Student Visa Rejections:

  • In FY 2023-24 (October 2023 – September 2024), the US received 6.79 lakh (679,000) F-1 student visa applications.
  • 2.79 lakh (279,000) were rejected, marking a 41% rejection rate.
  • This is a significant jump from the 36% rejection rate in the previous year.

A Drastic Increase Over the Years

  • 2014 rejection rate: 15%
  • 2024 rejection rate: 41%

This means student visa rejections have nearly tripled in a decade, affecting universities and international students hoping to study in the US.

How Does This Impact Indian Students?

Although official country-specific data is unavailable, reports suggest that Indian students have been among the hardest hit:

  • A 38% drop in student visas issued to Indians in the first nine months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

What’s Next for Visa Applicants?

1. Stricter Monitoring to Prevent Fraud

The US government is expected to introduce more robust security measures to prevent bot-based bookings and unfair practices.

2. Delays Likely to Continue

With high rejection rates and backlogs, genuine applicants must prepare for continued waiting times, especially for B1/B2 and F-1 visas.

3. Alternative Visa Processing Locations

The US has already allowed Indian applicants to schedule appointments in Frankfurt and Bangkok. More such locations may be introduced to reduce the load on Indian embassies.

The US visa system is undergoing a significant transformation, with stricter policies to curb fraud and manage overwhelming demand. While these measures aim to protect legitimate applicants, they also highlight the ongoing struggles with visa backlogs and rejections.

For Indian travelers, students, and business professionals, navigating the visa process remains challenging, with longer wait times and increased scrutiny. If you’re planning to apply for a US visa, early application and proper documentation are more important than ever.
