Chandrasekaran Joins ₹150 Cr Club with FY25 Pay

In India Inc.’s record-breaking year for finance, N Chandrasekaran, the Executive Chairman of Tata Sons, has cemented his place among India’s top-paid corporate chiefs. With a total compensation package of ₹156 crore for the financial year ending March 2025, Chandrasekaran saw his compensation rise by 15% on a year-on-year basis, reflecting his increased role in defining the Tata Group’s vast business empire.

Since becoming the Tata Sons boss in February 2017, the ex-TCS MD has revolutionized not just his own compensation package but also the direction of the 155-year-old group. His pay package has almost doubled to ₹55 crore in FY18, reflecting the Tata Group’s aggressive forays into new-age sectors and strategic turns in traditional businesses.

From ₹55 Cr to ₹156 Cr: The Paycheck Growth Curve
Chandrasekaran’s compensation for FY25 puts him solidly in the ₹150 crore+ league of Indian CEOs. His compensation has increased in tandem with Tata Group’s gigantic presence across sectors—from IT and telephony to EVs, airlines, and semiconductors. With this increment, he becomes the member of:

Rajiv Kaul, Vice Chairman of CMS Info Systems, who received ₹181 crore in FY24
Sandeep Kalra, CEO at Persistent Systems, with an FY25 pay package of ₹148 crore
The increasing executive remunerations are a reflection not only of market mood but also of the escalating size and sophistication of Indian business dynasties, particularly conglomerates such as Tata, Reliance, and Adani.

Tata’s Semiconductor Bet: Sharp Growth Under High Risk
One of the standout stories during Chandrasekaran’s tenure is Tata Electronics—the group’s ambitious foray into the semiconductor and precision manufacturing industry. Established only five years ago in 2020, the business has already become the sixth-largest contributor to Tata’s revenues.

Revenue (FY25): ₹66,601 crore
Loss: ₹70 crore (reflecting near-break-even operations in a capital-intensive industry)
Significant investments:
Acquired Wistron India for ₹1,078 crore in 2024
Purchased 60% stake in Pegatron India for ₹1,650 crore
Received ₹3,000 crore equity infusion from Tata Sons in FY25
These steps are consistent with India’s national drive for semiconductor independence under the ‘Make in India’ program. Tata’s bold foray into this space is likely to yield dividends over the next few years, possibly making it a global contender.

The Aviation Gamble: Revenues Fly, But Air India Bleeds
While semiconductors are promising, the aviation sector is still a mixed bag for Tata Sons. The conglomerate posted ₹78,636 crore in aviation revenue, which was its fourth-largest group income contributor.

But Air India, the airline that Tata acquired back from the government in 2022, is still a major drain on the group’s bottom line:

Air India Losses (FY25): ₹3,225 crore
Turnaround strategy in motion: Modern fleet, single branding, and global partnerships
In spite of the losses, the Tata Group is optimistic about aviation, banking on increasing demand and the long-term profitability of a consolidated airline group (Air India + Vistara + AirAsia India).

Tata Neu Falters, But TCS Keeps the Fort Standing
Tata’s digital aspirations, in the form of Tata Neu, have not yet paid off. The “super app” initiative incurred a whopping ₹4,610 crore loss for FY25. To keep the business going and competing with behemoths Amazon and Reliance’s JioMart, Tata Sons invested ₹3,960 crore during the year.

In comparison, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the group’s prized asset, is still a giant:
TCS Profit (FY25): ₹48,797 crore
Accounts for a substantial part of the group’s net profit
Remains at the forefront of digital transformation, cloud, and AI services worldwide
This contrast within the Tata portfolio—loss-making digital bets and robust legacy cash cows—emphasizes the problems of transformation facing conglomerates in the 21st century.

The Vision of Leadership: Chandrasekaran in Command
During Chandrasekaran’s tenure, the Tata Group has experienced:

Significant investments in green energy, EVs, and 5G
Strategic consolidation in airlines and telecom
Large bets on AI, data centers, and semiconductors
Building consumer brands through Tata Digital and Tata Consumer Products
He’s credited with introducing agility, data-driven decision making, and tech-savvy leadership to the legacy empire. The ₹156 crore paycheck is more than just a figure—it’s a testament to the trust that the Tata Board and shareholders have in his vision.

In addition, his skill in handling the dissimilar interests of more than 100 operating businesses, coupled with steering the intricacies of geopolitics, supply chains, and regulatory challenges, has drawn praise both internally and externally within the group.

What Lies Ahead?
As FY26 starts, Tata Sons is at a make-or-break moment:

Semiconductor fabs and component manufacturing might reshape India’s electronics future
Air India turnaround continues to be under the microscope
Tata Neu will need to discover how to become profitable or face closure
TCS and Tata Motors will likely carry on steering returns
Expansion outside India and IPOs (like Tata Technologies) are in the pipeline
Under these circumstances, N Chandrasekaran’s stewardship will be key to guaranteeing survival—but also sustainable expansion and international competitiveness.

With India poised on the threshold of a new industrial era, and Tata Group playing its critical part, the boss in charge—one of the best-compensated in the nation—is being rewarded not simply for what he’s already done, but for piloting the vessel into a uncharted, high-risk future.
