Why Fauci defends his work.

Testing before Congress on his work on the virus while serving as the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for two presidents, Dr. Anthony Fauci defended his decision-making during the COVID-19 epidemic on Monday.

Throughout the tense three hours of the hearing, House Republicans who convened the hearing quizzed Fauci about the causes of COVID-19, a virus that killed over a million Americans, as well as his involvement in the reaction. Fauci, 83, who was also President Joe Biden’s main medical adviser, was making her first appearance before Congress since quitting her job with the government in 2022.

In response to claims that he done so to escape oversight, Fauci has stated on multiple occasions that he did not conduct official business using personal email. In addition, he said he has maintained an open mind on the virus’s origins and gave the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic an explanation for the significant changes in advice that occurred in the early months of the pandemic.

“Things change when you’re dealing with a new outbreak,” Fauci stated. “The scientific method gathers the data necessary for you to make a decision, suggestion, or guideline at that particular moment.”

“It’s critical that you use the scientific method to gather information as things change and develop so that you can adjust your guidelines, recommendations, and even your way of thinking,” Fauci continued.

Republicans on the panel pressed Fauci on whether the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China or any other facility was responsible for COVID-19, as well as how the institute acquired grant funds from the US government. That explanation runs opposite to another, which states that an outdoor food market “spillover event” was the source of the infection.

In his testimony, Fauci stated that COVID-19 could not have originated from the viruses being investigated at the Wuhan Institute under an NIH subgrant, although he did not exclude out elsewhere.

The $120,000 grant that was originally paid to another group instead of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, according to Fauci, was a tiny portion of the overall budget.

“They have enough of additional money to spend on side projects if they decide to pursue them. According to Fauci, they wouldn’t necessarily need to use a $120,000 NIH grant to accomplish it.
