Sooraj Dooba Hain Made ₹70 Crore, I Got ₹1 Crore: Amaal Mallik Speaks Out on Bollywood’s Music Industry

Music composer and singer Amaal Mallik has spoken candidly about the harsh realities of the Hindi film music industry. In a recent interview, Amaal revealed how standing up for his rights cost him work, money, and peace of mind, while also highlighting the massive income gap between Bollywood composers and their counterparts in the South Indian film industry.

His comments have reignited conversations around fair pay, creative rights, and respect for music composers in Hindi cinema.

Amaal Mallik Says Speaking Up Cost Him 45 Films

Amaal Mallik revealed that demanding basic rights and credit in Bollywood came at a heavy price. According to him, producers and labels were uncomfortable with his insistence on fairness, which led to him being dropped from dozens of projects.

“I Was Dropped From 40–45 Films”

The composer shared that over the last few years, he lost out on nearly 40 to 45 films simply because he refused to stay silent. Amaal explained that while many people in the industry prefer composers who do not question contracts or payments, he chose to stand up for himself.

He recalled moments where he would start working on a film in the morning and end the day fighting a legal battle, all for asking for rightful credit and compensation.

The Sooraj Dooba Hain Example That Says It All

One of the most striking moments from the interview was when Amaal spoke about the financial success of his hit song Sooraj Dooba Hain from the film Roy.

₹70 Crore for the Label, Barely ₹1 Crore for the Composer

Amaal revealed that Sooraj Dooba Hain earned approximately ₹60–70 crore for the music label. However, he received almost nothing in comparison. Apart from limited publishing rights, which he described as negligible, the total amount he earned did not even come close to ₹1 crore.

He pointed out that despite the song’s massive popularity and long-term revenue, the composer does not benefit proportionately in the Hindi film industry.

Bollywood vs South India: A Huge Pay Gap

Amaal Mallik did not hesitate to compare Bollywood with the South Indian film industries, calling the difference in treatment and pay shocking.

South Composers Earn 5 Times More

According to Amaal, top composers in South India earn anywhere between ₹10–15 crore per film while also retaining ownership of their music rights. In contrast, Bollywood composers are usually paid ₹2–3 crore and are forced to give up all rights to their work.

He explained that this system leaves Hindi composers financially restricted, despite their music generating massive profits for production houses and labels.

Why Music Rights Matter More Than Just Money

Amaal stressed that owning music rights is not just about earning more, but about having creative and financial freedom.

“Money Gives You the Power to Help Others”

He shared that financial stability allows artists to support others, invest in new talent, and create meaningful work without pressure. Without fair compensation, composers remain dependent on labels and producers, limiting their ability to make independent choices.

Amaal added that in Bollywood, composers often have no long-term security, even after delivering chart-topping hits.

The Fight for Composer Credit in Bollywood

One of the most revealing parts of Amaal’s interview was his discussion about composer credits in Hindi cinema.

“I Was the First to Demand Composer Credit”

Amaal revealed that he was among the first composers to insist on proper credit for his work, as early as 2004. At that time, composers were often sidelined, with singers or labels receiving most of the recognition.

Today, composer credits are visible everywhere, but Amaal says this change came after years of struggle and resistance from the industry.

A Career Built on Hits, Yet Limited Rewards

Despite the challenges, Amaal Mallik’s contribution to Bollywood music is undeniable.

Songs That Defined a Generation

Amaal made his debut as a composer with Salman Khan’s Jai Ho. He gained widespread recognition with Sooraj Dooba Hain and followed it up with several blockbuster songs including Soch Na Sake from Airlift, Kar Gayi Chull from Kapoor & Sons, Kaun Tujhe and Jab Tak from MS Dhoni: The Untold Story.

These songs continue to generate streams, views, and revenue, yet Amaal points out that the financial benefits rarely reach the composer.

Amaal Mallik’s Honest Admission About Personal Life

In a deeply personal revelation, Amaal shared that despite being in the industry for 16 years, he has only recently been able to buy a car for himself.

This statement highlighted how misleading public perception can be when it comes to the wealth of successful artists.

Fame Does Not Always Mean Financial Stability

Amaal explained that people often assume that hit songs automatically translate into wealth, but the reality for many composers is far from glamorous. Without ownership and fair contracts, long-term earnings remain limited.

Why His Words Are Striking a Chord

Amaal Mallik’s comments have resonated with many aspiring musicians and industry insiders. His willingness to speak openly about exploitation, inequality, and professional setbacks has sparked important conversations about reform in Bollywood’s music ecosystem.

His experience shows that success in terms of popularity does not always equal respect or financial security.

Amaal Mallik Today

Apart from composing and singing, Amaal has also explored independent music, releasing popular singles that allowed him more creative control. Songs like Chal Wahan Jaate Hain and Main Rahoon Ya Na Rahoon helped him connect directly with audiences outside the film industry.

Most recently, Amaal appeared as a participant on Bigg Boss 19, where his personality and journey reached an even wider audience.

The Bigger Question Bollywood Needs to Answer

Amaal Mallik’s revelations raise an uncomfortable but necessary question: why do composers who create the soul of a film earn so little compared to the profits their work generates?

As the industry evolves and audiences become more aware, voices like Amaal’s may push Bollywood toward a more transparent and fair system for music creators.
