Stand-Up to Shutdown: Kunal Kamra’s Joke Triggers FIR, Studio Demolition, and a Legal War

Kunal Kamra vs Maharashtra: What’s the Legal Fight All About?

Popular stand-up comic Kunal Kamra has now approached the Bombay High Court, asking it to cancel the FIR filed against him after his viral parody song that mocked Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Kamra says the FIR is a direct attack on his freedom of speech (Article 19) and right to life and liberty (Article 21) under the Indian Constitution.

The case is scheduled for hearing on April 21.

The Joke That Set Off a Political Earthquake

In a recent show titled ‘Naya Bharat’, Kamra performed a parody of the Bollywood song ‘Bholi Si Surat’, calling Eknath Shinde a ‘gaddar’ (traitor). This label refers to Shinde’s rebellion in 2022, which brought down the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena government.

Shinde’s supporters weren’t laughing. An FIR was filed by MLA Murji Patel, and soon Kamra found himself in the middle of a political and legal storm.

Comedy Club Attacked, Studio Shut Down

After Kamra’s joke went viral, the Habitat Studio in Khar, where the set was filmed, was vandalised by Shinde supporters.

While the studio claimed it had no control over performers’ content, the venue was partially demolished by civic authorities the next day. Officials cited “building violations,” but critics saw it as retaliation.

 Three Police Summons… All Skipped

Kamra has skipped three summons from Mumbai Police so far. But he has a reason: he says he’s received multiple threats and fears for his safety.

Despite this, Kamra has promised to cooperate with the investigation—but has a key question: “Will those who destroyed the venue also be punished?”

 Kamra Granted Temporary Protection

Earlier, the Madras High Court granted Kamra interim bail until April 7, protecting him from arrest. He argued he couldn’t travel to Maharashtra due to genuine threats to his safety.

Now, with that protection running out, Kamra is turning to the Bombay High Court for longer-term relief.

 “I Won’t Apologise”: Kamra Takes a Stand

Kamra is standing his ground. In a public statement, he said:

“Your inability to take a joke at the expense of a powerful public figure does not change the nature of my right. I will not apologise. I don’t fear this mob.”

His message is clear: Satire is not a crime.

Shinde’s Response: “Every Action Has a Reaction”

Eknath Shinde has distanced himself from the vandalism but said his supporters were emotional. He questioned Kamra’s motives:

“Who gave him the supari (contract) to target me?”

Shinde’s words have only added fuel to the fire.

What This Means for Free Speech in India

Kamra’s legal fight has become a major flashpoint in India’s ongoing debate on artistic freedom and censorship.

Will comedians still be allowed to poke fun at politicians?

Will satire survive in India’s heated political climate?

This case could set a big precedent—not just for Kamra, but for artists, performers, and free thinkers across the country.

 What’s Next?

The Bombay High Court will hear Kamra’s petition on April 21. Until then, all eyes are on the court—and the comedian who refused to stay silent.
