President Droupadi Murmu in Slovakia: A Historic Visit to Strengthen India-Europe Ties

A Historic Diplomatic Moment: First Indian President to Visit Slovakia in 29 Years

President Droupadi Murmu has made history by becoming only the second Indian Head of State to visit the Slovak Republic. Her visit marks a new chapter in India-Slovakia relations, as she arrived in Bratislava on Wednesday during the second leg of her two-nation state visit.

During this significant diplomatic outreach, President Murmu highlighted India’s economic resilience and called upon Slovakian businesses to invest in India through the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

India – A Beacon of Stability and Growth

“India Stands Out in a World of Uncertainty”

Speaking at the Slovakia-India Business Forum hosted by Slovakia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Murmu described India as a “shining example of progress” in today’s uncertain world. She emphasized the country’s stable political climate and reform-focused economic policies, which have helped India remain one of the fastest-growing major economies.

“India stands out due to its stable political environment and reform-oriented economic agenda, which encourages manufacturing and promotes ‘Ease of Doing Business’,” the President noted.

She invited Slovak companies to take advantage of India’s strengths by becoming partners in the government’s flagship ‘Make in India’ programme, which focuses on boosting domestic manufacturing, innovation, and foreign investment.

Tapping India’s Talent for Slovakia’s Growth

“Indian Professionals Can Help Slovakia Thrive”

President Murmu noted that Slovakia is currently seeking skilled workers and professionals from overseas to fill workforce gaps — and highlighted that Indian talent could play a major role in the country’s economic progress.

“I am convinced that Indian talent can be a valuable partner in the economic progress of Slovakia,” she said.

She also emphasized India’s ambition to become a $5 trillion economy in the near future and stated that Slovakia could be a key ally in achieving that target.

Slovakia’s Industrial Strength Meets India’s Economic Vision

A Natural Trade and Investment Partnership

Slovakia, located strategically in Central Europe, is known for its strong industrial base — especially in the automotive and high-tech sectors. President Murmu pointed out that both countries stand to gain from expanding trade, diversifying product baskets, and deepening cooperation in key sectors.

“Slovakia, with its strategic location in Europe and robust industry, presents an excellent opportunity for India to expand its economic footprint in the region,” she said.

India and Slovakia have been working together across several sectors for over a decade. But now, both nations are looking to diversify and modernize their economic engagement — especially in manufacturing, defense, and technology.

Visit to Tata Motors’ Jaguar Land Rover Plant in Nitra

A Showcase of Indo-Slovak Collaboration

One of the highlights of President Murmu’s visit was her tour of the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) manufacturing plant in Nitra, Slovakia — a major symbol of Indian investment in Europe. The facility, operated by Tata Motors’ JLR division, has been functional since 2018 and is the only site globally that manufactures the Land Rover Defender.

President Murmu met with Indian staff working at the Nitra plant and witnessed the production of the iconic Defender SUV. She praised the Slovak government’s support for the plant, which received €125 million in aid during its establishment.

“This state-of-the-art facility reflects Slovakia’s growing role in the global automotive supply chain,” she said.

Inside the Nitra Plant: A Symbol of Indian Excellence Abroad

The Heart of Global Defender Production

Here’s what makes the Nitra plant significant:

  • Launched: October 2018

  • Annual Capacity: 1,50,000 vehicles

  • Models Produced: Land Rover Defender and Discovery

  • Vehicles Manufactured So Far: Over 5,30,000 units

  • Employees: Over 4,400 (including 3,300 Slovaks, 800 Ukrainians, and 200 Indians)

  • Technology: Advanced aluminium manufacturing and automation systems

The facility stands as one of the most advanced automotive plants in Europe and represents Tata Motors’ global manufacturing ambitions.

India’s Global Automotive Impact: Electrification in Sight

JLR’s Future Plans in Slovakia

Katarina Chlebova, spokesperson for JLR Slovakia, welcomed President Murmu and confirmed the importance of the plant in JLR’s long-term strategy.

“We are very pleased the President visited our plant. JLR’s Slovakia facility is the biggest Indian investment in the country,” she said.

She also revealed that JLR plans to embrace electrification by producing at least one electric variant for each of its models by the end of this decade — aligning with India’s push toward sustainable mobility.

A Win-Win Partnership on the Rise

President Murmu’s visit to Slovakia comes at a time when both countries are looking to redefine their roles in a changing global economy. Her call for deeper collaboration — both in trade and talent — has opened doors for new partnerships between Indian businesses and Slovak industry leaders.

From state diplomacy to industrial collaboration, her visit demonstrates India’s growing confidence on the global stage — and its vision to build meaningful ties with forward-looking European nations like Slovakia.
