Tamil Nadu vs Centre: The Battle Over Language

The debate over language politics in India has flared up once again, with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Union Home Minister Amit Shah engaging in a heated exchange over the alleged imposition of Hindi.

While Stalin accused the BJP-led central government of attempting to enforce Hindi through the National Education Policy (NEP), Amit Shah countered by urging the Tamil Nadu government to introduce medical and engineering courses in Tamil.

Amit Shah’s Counterattack: “Introduce Courses in Tamil”

Responding to Stalin’s allegations, Amit Shah defended the Centre’s stance, claiming that it was the Modi government that had made key reforms to accommodate regional languages in recruitment exams.

“Till now, mother tongues had no place in the CAPF recruitment. PM Modi decided that our youth will now be able to write their CAPF exam in all Eighth Schedule languages, including Tamil,” Shah stated.

He further challenged Stalin, saying, “I urge the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to take steps towards introducing medical and engineering courses in Tamil as soon as possible.”

Stalin Hits Back: “An LKG Student Lecturing a PhD Holder”

MK Stalin was quick to retaliate, dismissing the Centre’s push for Hindi and asserting that Tamil Nadu had long surpassed the goals set by the NEP. He claimed that the policy was an attempt to blackmail Tamil Nadu into accepting Hindi imposition.

“This is like an LKG student lecturing a PhD holder. Dravidam does not take dictations from Delhi. Instead, it sets the course for the nation to follow,” he declared.

Stalin’s Challenge to BJP: “Make Hindi Your Election Agenda”

Stalin also ridiculed the BJP’s signature campaign supporting the NEP and three-language formula, calling it a “laughing stock” in Tamil Nadu.

“I challenge them to make this their core agenda in the 2026 Assembly elections and let it be a referendum on Hindi imposition,” he wrote.

Tamil Nadu’s Two-Language System vs NEP’s Three-Language Formula

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommends a three-language formula, though it claims that no language will be imposed. However, the policy has failed to gain traction in Tamil Nadu, where the DMK government insists that the existing two-language system (Tamil and English) is sufficient.

The DMK argues that Tamil Nadu has flourished under this system and sees no reason for a third language. Meanwhile, the BJP maintains that learning Hindi would benefit people when they travel to other states.

“Tamil Nadu Will Never Accept Hindi Colonialism”: Stalin

Citing history, Stalin claimed that every attempt to impose Hindi in Tamil Nadu had been met with resistance and eventual defeat.

“History is clear. Those who tried to impose Hindi on Tamil Nadu have either been defeated or later aligned with the DMK. Tamil Nadu will not tolerate Hindi colonialism replacing British colonialism,” he said.

He further accused the Union government of excessive use of Hindi in government schemes, awards, and institutions, calling it a “nauseating extent of imposition” that suffocates non-Hindi speakers, who, he claimed, form the majority in India.

“Men may come, men may go. But even long after Hindi dominance is shattered in India, history will remember that it was DMK that stood as the vanguard,” he declared.

BJP’s Annamalai Calls Stalin’s Claims “Fake Drama”

Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai dismissed Stalin’s statements as an act of desperation. He claimed that the BJP’s signature campaign supporting NEP was receiving overwhelming support.

“Thiru MK Stalin, our online signature campaign via PuthiyaKalvi.in has been supported by over 2 lakh people in just 36 hours, and our on-ground campaign continues to grow,” Annamalai posted on social media.

He further stated, “As TN CM, you seem visibly rattled. Your rants against our campaign mean nothing to us.”

The Language War Continues

The face-off between the DMK and BJP over language imposition is not new, but the intensity of this round signals that the issue will continue to be a hot-button topic as elections approach. With Tamil Nadu firmly opposing the three-language formula, and the BJP pushing for it, the battle lines have been drawn.

Will Tamil Nadu stand its ground, or will the BJP manage to gain traction with its language policies? The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections may provide the answer.
