Following her arrest, her stepfather denied any involvement and expressed shock at the incident. In a statement, he said:
“It is deeply distressing that my reputation and family’s future are now being tarnished by something beyond our control. Despite a lifelong dedication to law enforcement, my years of hard work may now be unfairly associated with these events.”
He also clarified that he had not been in contact with Ranya Rao since she got married four months ago.
