A full jury has been convened to hear the gun allegations against the president’s son, Hunter Biden, after the first day of his criminal trial came to an end. The purchase and possession of a handgun in 2018, when Biden’s memoir suggests he was battling addiction, is the basis for three felony charges against the second son of US President Joe Biden. The younger Biden is accused of falsifying on his federal guns application, which asks about drug use, by the prosecution. It is his not guilty plea.
In a federal court located in Wilmington, Delaware, the trial began on Monday. Four alternate jurors and six men and six women were chosen for the jury. On Tuesday, the opening remarks are scheduled to start. The trial took place in the midst of President Biden’s reelection campaign in November, and concerns were raised regarding the jury’s capacity to stay unbiased given the contentious political climate surrounding the contest. To check for potential biases, questions about topics like gun rights and drug addiction were posed to the prospective jurors. The final jury was instructed by Judge Maryellen Noreika not to read or discuss the matter prior to the Monday proceedings being adjourned.

First Lady Jill Biden, Hunter’s wife Melissa Cohen Biden, and his half-sister Ashley Biden were among the Biden family members present for Monday’s festivities. In a statement, Joe Biden said, “Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today.” He also mentioned how many families have loved ones who have battled addiction.
In October 2018, Hunter Biden purchased a Colt Cobra.38-caliber revolver and was charged with lying about using illegal narcotics. Biden was found to have been in possession of the weapon for 11 days without authorization. A plea agreement that would have resolved the matter collapsed in July of last year, leading to the current trial.
Although most defendants receive lower penalties, Hunter Biden may spend up to 25 years in jail if found guilty on all charges in the Delaware case, according to the US Department of Justice. Hunter Biden’s years-long addiction to crack cocaine, which he has openly disclosed and which has been a major theme in his autobiography Beautiful Things, published in 2021, is anticipated to be the main focus of the case. During a hearing held last year, he informed Judge Noreika that he had been clean since the middle of 2019.
The aim of the prosecution is to demonstrate that Hunter Biden was aware of his deception when he checked the “no” option next to a question on a federal gun purchase form that inquired about his use of illegally obtained controlled substances. Hunter Biden’s phone and iCloud account may contain information that the prosecution has disclosed in court documents, including pictures of him consuming crack and texts he exchanged with narcotics traffickers. They mentioned that Kathleen Buhle, his ex-wife, might be called as a witness.
