Indian Stock Market Opens With a Bang

Mumbai – Indian stock markets opened the week on a strong note, with both Sensex and Nifty registering impressive early gains on Monday. Positive global cues, strong earnings from banks, and steady buying by foreign investors helped boost market sentiment.

At around 9:29 AM, the BSE Sensex surged 396.06 points (0.50%) to trade at 78,949.26, while the NSE Nifty climbed 98.20 points (0.41%) to 23,949.85.

Nifty Bank, Midcap, and Smallcap Indices Also Rise

The rally was not limited to large caps. Here’s how the broader market performed:

  • Nifty Bank jumped 862.25 points (1.59%) to 55,152.45

  • Nifty Midcap 100 gained 233.50 points (0.44%) to 52,891.30

  • Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 50.15 points (0.31%) to 16,460.35

Banking stocks were the top contributors to the early rally, with private sector banks leading the charge.

Large Banks Shine: What’s Fueling the Surge?

Large private banks like HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, and ICICI Bank hit new all-time highs. Experts say that their quarterly earnings released over the weekend met or exceeded market expectations, fueling investor optimism.

According to analysts, this strong performance is likely to drive markets higher in the coming sessions, especially with earnings season in full swing.

Market Support and Resistance Levels to Watch

 Nifty Outlook:

  • Support Levels: 23,700, 22,600, 22,500

  • Resistance Levels: 24,000 (immediate), then 24,200 and 24,500

 Bank Nifty Outlook:

  • Support Levels: 54,000, 53,700, 53,500

  • Resistance Levels: 54,500, 54,700, 55,000

Experts suggest traders should watch the 24,000 mark for Nifty and 55,000 for Bank Nifty closely, as a breakout beyond these could signal a strong upward momentum.

Global Cues: Mixed Signals from US and Asia

🇺🇸 US Markets Recap:

  • Dow Jones: Fell 1.33% to 39,142.23

  • S&P 500: Gained 0.13% to 5,282.70

  • Nasdaq: Dropped 0.13% to 16,286.45

 Asian Markets Performance:

  • In Green: China, Bangkok

  • In Red: Jakarta, Japan, Seoul

Despite a mixed performance globally, especially in the US, Indian markets remained resilient, supported by domestic factors and foreign inflows.

FIIs Continue Buying Spree, DIIs Still Booking Profits

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers on April 17, purchasing equities worth ₹4,667.94 crore. Meanwhile, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) continued their selling streak, offloading equities worth ₹2,006.15 crore on the same day.

This suggests global confidence in Indian equities, despite local institutions taking some profit off the table.

🇮🇳 US-India Trade Talks: Market Watching Closely

The visit of US Vice President JD Vance to India has sparked hope of a quick trade deal and relief from heavier import tariffs. Market experts believe this could further boost investor sentiment if negotiations go well.

Devarsh Vakil, Head of Prime Research at HDFC Securities, said that market participants will now focus on:

  • Corporate commentaries

  • Adapting to new tariffs

  • Trends in supply chains and consumer behavior

Top Gainers and Losers in Early Trade

Top Gainers (Sensex):

  • Tech Mahindra

  • Infosys

  • HCL Tech

  • HDFC Bank

  • Axis Bank

  • ICICI Bank

Top Losers (Sensex):

  • Asian Paints

  • Hindustan Unilever

  • Titan

  • Sun Pharma

  • UltraTech Cement

 What Should Investors Do Now?

With the Nifty approaching 24,000 and Sensex nearing the 79,000 mark, investors should:

  1. Stay cautious around resistance levels

  2. Book partial profits in high-performing stocks

  3. Look for buying opportunities in sectors with strong earnings visibility like banking and IT

  4. Keep an eye on global news and earnings commentary from Indian corporates

India’s stock market started the week strong, riding on positive global cues, robust private bank results, and foreign investor support. If momentum sustains, Nifty may soon break the 24,000 barrier, setting the stage for a bullish summer.

However, with earnings season underway and global uncertainties still present, investors are advised to stay informed and make well-researched decisions.
