Over 30 Arrested in Assam for Pro-Pakistan Social Media Posts After Pahalgam Attack

Following the brutal Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that left 26 civilians dead, authorities in Assam have arrested over 30 individuals for allegedly making pro-Pakistan or anti-national posts on social media.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the crackdown and issued a stern warning: those found more deeply involved or with a history of such behavior could be charged under the National Security Act (NSA)—a law allowing long-term detention without trial.

Assam CM: Bharat and Pakistan Are Enemy Nations

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Sarma took a tough stance:

“There are no similarities between Bharat and Pakistan. The two countries are enemy nations, and we must remain so.”

He added that the state government will take zero tolerance measures against any support—verbal or online—for Pakistan, especially in the wake of such a horrific terror act.

Arrests Across Northeast: MLA, Lawyer, Journalist Among Those Held

The crackdown wasn’t limited to Assam. Similar arrests were reported in Meghalaya and Tripura as well.

Who Has Been Arrested So Far

  • MLA Aminul Islam (AIUDF): Booked for sedition after claiming the Pahalgam and 2019 Pulwama attacks were government conspiracies.

  • Journalists and lawyers: Accused of sharing misleading or anti-national narratives.

  • Students and teachers: Held for allegedly praising Pakistan or criticizing Indian forces.

  • Social media users: Arrested for memes, comments, or status updates seen as sympathetic to Pakistan.

At least 24 individuals were initially arrested last week, and the number has since risen to over 30.

What Triggered the Arrests

The terror attack near Pahalgam occurred when gunmen opened fire at a meadow in Anantnag district, a popular tourist zone in south Kashmir. The attack killed 26 tourists, including women and children.

The sheer brutality of the massacre shocked the nation and ignited a wave of patriotism and outrage—both offline and online.

Authorities began monitoring social media platforms for content that was perceived as “glorifying the enemy” or undermining national unity.

Freedom of Expression vs. National Security

The arrests have triggered a free speech debate, with critics warning that arbitrary arrests over social media posts could be misused.

However, the Assam government insists the action is justified under Section 124A of the IPC (sedition) and Section 153A (promoting enmity).

“This isn’t about dissent. It’s about celebrating our enemies during national mourning,” said a senior police official.

Legal experts say that invoking the NSA is a serious move and could attract scrutiny from human rights watchdogs, both national and international.

Centre Gives Military Full Freedom to Respond

While states like Assam deal with internal fallout, the central government is preparing a broader response to the Pahalgam attack.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a high-level security review, stated that the armed forces have been given:

“Complete operational freedom to decide on the mode, targets, and timing of their response.”

This indicates that a military retaliation—possibly airstrikes or cross-border operations—may be in the works, similar to the 2019 Balakot airstrikes after the Pulwama terror attack.

Public Reaction: Shock, Patriotism, and Anger

Across India, especially in BJP-ruled states, the reaction to the Pahalgam killings and pro-Pakistan posts has been fierce.

  • #NoMercyForTerrorists and #JusticeForPahalgamVictims have trended on X (formerly Twitter).

  • Many users have called for stricter digital surveillance and speedy trials for those arrested.

  • Some citizens, however, have voiced concern that these crackdowns could set a dangerous precedent for censorship and political misuse.

What is the National Security Act (NSA)?

The NSA allows preventive detention of up to 12 months without charges or trial, if authorities believe a person is a threat to public order or national security.

  • Once booked under NSA, regular bail becomes nearly impossible.

  • Courts have limited power to review the detention.

  • Human rights groups often criticize the law for being too harsh and vague.

By threatening NSA action, the Assam government is signaling zero leniency for what it sees as support for terror or enemy propaganda.

Will This Lead to a Larger Crackdown Across India?

Possibly. Similar patterns were seen after the 2019 Pulwama attack, when states began monitoring and arresting individuals for anti-national speech.

Now, with Modi granting full freedom to the armed forces and northeast states cracking down on online dissent, a nationwide tightening of digital expression related to national security may be imminent.

Patriotism, Fear, and a Nation on Edge

The arrest of more than 30 people for pro-Pakistan social media posts is just one dimension of India’s growing post-Pahalgam response.

From online crackdowns in the Northeast to military readiness on the borders, the country is on high alert.

Whether this wave of arrests becomes a defining national policy shift, or simply a temporary reaction to tragedy, remains to be seen. But what’s clear is this:

India is angry. The government is resolute. And the space for “anti-national” speech is shrinking fast.
