Air India Wants Boeing Jets China Rejected Over Trade Tensions

Indian carrier takes interest in planes stuck due to US-China tariff war

Air India, owned by the Tata Group, is reportedly interested in buying Boeing planes that Chinese airlines have refused to accept. The reason? A growing trade war between the U.S. and China that has disrupted aircraft deliveries.

According to sources familiar with internal discussions, Air India is looking to grab already-built 737 Max jets that were originally meant for China. These planes were left stranded after China imposed up to 125% tariffs on U.S. goods, leading to suspended aircraft handovers.

Why Is Air India Interested in These Jets?

Urgent need for planes to speed up revival

Air India is on a fast-track mission to rebuild its fleet and revive its brand. The airline is aggressively expanding, especially through its budget arm, Air India Express, which is going head-to-head with IndiGo, India’s largest carrier.

Taking advantage of grounded 737 Max jets gives Air India a chance to quickly scale operations while waiting for new deliveries from its massive 2023 aircraft order.

“The airline sees an opportunity to grab more planes quickly, especially if other Asian carriers don’t move fast enough,” one insider said.

Air India’s Boeing Deal History

Already flying 41 jets meant for China

This isn’t new for Air India. The airline has already accepted 41 Boeing 737 Max planes that were initially intended for Chinese carriers. These were jets whose deliveries were paused after the 737 Max was grounded worldwide in 2019 due to two fatal crashes.

Sources say Air India could receive up to nine more such jets by June 2025, taking the total to 50.

Global Trade War Creates New Opportunities

Airlines like Malaysia Aviation also join the Boeing jet rush

Air India isn’t alone. Other Asian airlines, like Malaysia Aviation Group, are also negotiating with Boeing to snap up available delivery slots vacated by Chinese buyers. This has created a mini gold rush among carriers needing quick additions to their fleets.

Still, there are challenges. Some planes already have custom interiors set up for Chinese customers, which may require costly reconfiguration. Plus, Boeing can’t officially resell any plane still under a live contract with a Chinese airline.

Why Boeing Needs Buyers Like Air India

US-China friction hits Boeing’s biggest market

The ongoing U.S.-China tension is a major threat for Boeing, a company that once counted China as a key market. Now, Chinese regulators have blocked 737 Max deliveries and ordered local airlines to avoid U.S. planes. Some 737 Max jets already in China have even been shipped back to the U.S.

The friction has allowed European rival Airbus to strengthen its position in China, leaving Boeing more dependent on buyers like Air India, Malaysia Aviation, and others.

What This Means for Air India’s Growth Plans

Jet shortage could slow down expansion

Despite the windfall of reallocated Boeing jets, Air India still faces challenges:

  • Deliveries of the 140 narrowbody jets from its 2023 order won’t begin before March 2026.

  • A retrofit program is temporarily grounding some planes.

  • Some older Airbus aircraft will soon be phased out.

  • Supply chain issues are delaying upgrades on newly acquired 737s.

Still, CEO Campbell Wilson remains focused on expanding operations with budget fares and tapping into India’s booming domestic travel demand.

The Bigger Picture: How the Trade War Reshapes Aviation

China’s rejection of Boeing may boost Asian rivals

The global aircraft market is being reshaped by politics. China’s move to cut off Boeing gives other Asian airlines a unique opening to grab newer jets faster and cheaper.

For Air India, it’s a rare chance to catch up with IndiGo and push its low-cost brand Air India Express deeper into the domestic and short-haul international space.

If it plays its cards right, Air India’s Boeing bet could become a big win.
