India Joins Global Alliance to Contain Rinderpest

Rinderpest, also known as cattle plague, is a highly contagious viral disease that historically decimated livestock populations, with massive socio-economic consequences. After centuries of devastation, the world celebrated when rinderpest was declared eradicated in 2011—a rare victory, as only smallpox in humans had previously been eliminated.

Despite its eradication, rinderpest remains a threat due to the existence of virus samples in some research facilities. Accidental leaks or bioterrorism could unleash a new outbreak, putting at risk the agricultural backbone of many economies, especially in developing countries like India.

“Although rinderpest is no longer circulating in animals, we must not let our guard down,” cautioned Dr. Monique Eloit, director-general of WOAH, in a recent briefing. “Continued vigilance is vital to protect the gains of eradication and food security worldwide.”

India’s Role and Commitments in the Global Alliance

India, with its vast livestock population and history of successful rinderpest eradication campaigns, will play a key role in the alliance’s activities. The country has pledged to:

Secure and limit access to remaining rinderpest virus-containing materials in national laboratories.

Contribute technical expertise and participate in international simulation exercises.

Enhance regional biosecurity through joint surveillance and rapid response mechanisms.

“India’s accession to the rinderpest alliance marks a renewed commitment to global animal health,” said Dr. Abhijeet Singh, Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying. “Our experience in disease surveillance and outbreak management will strengthen the collective safety net.”

Global Livestock Health and Food Security Impact

According to the FAO, an outbreak today could result in widespread cattle deaths, economic losses exceeding billions of dollars, and food shortages in vulnerable regions. Livestock forms the backbone of India’s rural economy, supporting the livelihoods of over 150 million households.

“Preventing rinderpest recurrence is crucial for the world’s food security and poverty reduction agenda,” said Dr. Maria Helena Semedo, FAO Deputy Director-General. “India’s involvement enhances global preparedness.”

Collaborative Surveillance and Preparedness

India’s alliance membership involves sharing surveillance data, reporting suspicious symptoms promptly, and participating in capacity-building programs. The broader initiative intends to phase out at-risk rinderpest virus stocks and support research on stronger diagnostics and emergency response protocols.

WOAH and FAO are also encouraging member nations to invest in digital surveillance tools and regular simulation exercises to test response readiness.

Regional and International Perspectives

Neighboring South Asian countries have welcomed India’s proactive engagement, citing the region’s interconnected livestock trade routes. Experts also link these efforts to lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, which underscored the dangers of lax biosecurity and global supply chain vulnerabilities.

“Cross-border collaboration is key,” noted Dr. R.K. Sharma, a veterinary epidemiologist in New Delhi. “Our success with rinderpest can serve as a model for tackling other transboundary animal diseases that threaten regional health and trade.”

Challenges Ahead for the Global Rinderpest Alliance

Despite advances, challenges remain in ensuring all laboratories adhere to bio-containment standards, tracking remaining virus material, and sustaining political will in an era when resources compete with other urgent health needs.

The alliance is calling for increased funding, transparent reporting, and ongoing public awareness campaigns to maintain momentum in this post-eradication era.
