DGCA Begins Inspection at Air India’s Main Hub

The DGCA inspection, focused on Air India’s central operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), comes after the national carrier reported multiple technical snags and received passenger complaints in recent weeks. The aviation watchdog confirmed that the audit will scrutinize aircraft maintenance records, engineering practices, crew rostering, flight duty times, and adherence to mandated safety protocols.

A senior DGCA official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Hindu, “This is a routine but comprehensive inspection aimed at ensuring all safety guidelines are being strictly followed, especially at Air India’s primary hub.”

Recent Incidents Prompt Regulatory Action

Pressure has mounted on Air India following a spate of operational hiccups. Last month, a New Delhi-bound flight was forced to return mid-air due to a technical malfunction, while several passengers recently took to social media to highlight delays and insufficient communication. These incidents have drawn the attention of regulatory agencies and fueled concerns over crew fatigue and engineering oversight.

Civil aviation analyst Mark D’Souza commented, “While scheduled audits are part of DGCA’s standard protocol, the timing suggests heightened vigilance given Air India’s transition under the Tata Group and its critical role in India’s international connectivity.”

What the DGCA Inspection Covers

Maintenance and Engineering Checks

Inspectors are examining detailed logs for fleet maintenance, tracking repair quality, frequency of recurring snags, and adherence to manufacturer guidelines. Air India, which operates a mix of Boeing and Airbus aircraft, has been working on fleet modernization, but legacy maintenance issues remain a challenge.

Crew Rostering and Fatigue Management

The audit also covers crew scheduling, flight duty regulations, and rest periods. DGCA will review if Air India complies with the Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) to prevent crew fatigue, a key factor in safe flight operations.

Safety Protocols and Documentation

Documentation—including pre-flight checks, handling of in-flight emergencies, and incident reporting—is under the microscope. DGCA officials are interviewing staff on protocols and emergency preparedness.

Passenger Services and Complaint Redressal

The regulator is also reviewing processes for handling passenger grievances and compensation, particularly in the wake of persistent complaints regarding customer service and flight disruptions.

Air India’s Response and Continued Operations

In an official statement, Air India said, “We fully support DGCA’s inspection and wish to reiterate our unwavering commitment to the highest safety and operational standards.” The airline pledged full cooperation and expressed confidence in meeting or exceeding regulatory expectations.

Industry observers note that such audits, while potentially disruptive, are vital for the public’s trust in national carriers. Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has previously emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance policy for safety lapses, stating, “Safety is non-negotiable, and airlines must adhere to the most rigorous standards.”

Context: Air India’s Transformation and Regulatory Oversight

This inspection comes at a time when Air India is undergoing a multi-billion dollar transformation under Tata Group ownership. The airline has announced plans to modernize its fleet and improve customer experience, but it faces legacy maintenance issues and competitive pressures from low-cost rivals.

The DGCA, as India’s aviation regulator, routinely audits airlines but often intensifies scrutiny following incidents or passenger complaints. Last year, similar audits led to temporary grounding of some aircraft and revised safety protocols.

What’s Next: Possible Outcomes of the DGCA Audit

Based on inspection findings, the DGCA could issue safety directives, mandate additional training, or, in severe cases, ground certain aircraft. Air India may be required to submit rectification plans and demonstrate compliance with airworthiness standards.

Aviation lawyer Rajeev Suri notes, “DGCA inspections are effective when followed by transparent reporting and strict enforcement. Passengers expect clarity and accountability from both the regulator and the airline.”
