Congress Demands Special Parliament Session After Pahalgam Terror Attack

35 Killed in Cold-Blooded Attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam

In a major political move following the brutal terror attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam, Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding a special session of Parliament.
The tragic attack on April 22 claimed the lives of 35 tourists and a local Kashmiri, leaving the nation in shock and grief.

The Congress leaders emphasized that unity across political lines is vital at this crucial moment, and called for a powerful demonstration of collective resolve through a special parliamentary session.

Congress Leaders Write Strong Letters to PM Modi

Mallikarjun Kharge’s Appeal for Unity

Mallikarjun Kharge, President of the Congress and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, stressed that India needs to show solidarity and strength.
In his letter, he said:

“At this moment, when unity and solidarity are essential, the Opposition believes it is important to convene a special session of both Houses of Parliament at the earliest. This will be a powerful demonstration of our collective resolve.”

Kharge’s letter was shared publicly by Congress MP Jairam Ramesh on X (formerly Twitter), making the party’s stand clear to the nation.

Rahul Gandhi Echoes the Demand

In a separate but similar letter, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, said:

“The terrorist attack in Pahalgam has outraged every Indian. India must show that we will always stand together against terrorism.”

He urged the Prime Minister to call a special session so that “the representatives of the people can show their unity and determination.”

Parliament’s Current Status: No Sessions Until July

Currently, Parliament is not in session. The Budget Session ended on April 4, and the Monsoon Session is scheduled to begin only in July.

Given the gap, Kharge and Rahul Gandhi argue that a special session is necessary to immediately address the situation and present a united national front against terrorism.

Rising Tensions Between India and Pakistan

Pakistan Suspected Behind Pahalgam Attack

According to government sources, Pakistan-based terror groups are suspected of planning and executing the attack at Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam.
The incident has deepened tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad.

The government had earlier called an all-party meeting to discuss the situation and future strategy. Opposition leaders, including Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, expressed full support for any strong action against those responsible.

Prime Minister Modi’s Strong Words

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not minced words following the tragedy.
He said:

“There is grief and rage from Kargil to Kanyakumari. This attack was not just on tourists; it was an attack on India’s soul.”

PM Modi vowed that the terrorists and their handlers will receive a punishment they “cannot imagine.”

“The time has come to raze whatever is left of the terror haven. The will of 140 crore Indians will break the back of the masters of terror,” he declared.

India’s Swift Diplomatic Actions

Indus Waters Treaty and Visa Services Suspended

In a bold diplomatic move, India has:

  • Suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan.

  • Halted visa services for Pakistani nationals.

These steps signal a major escalation in India’s response to Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack.

Pakistan’s Retaliation Threats

In retaliation, Islamabad has threatened to:

  • Suspend all bilateral agreements with India.

  • Potentially nullify the Simla Agreement, which recognizes the Line of Control between the two countries.

This rising hostility marks a dangerous turn in India-Pakistan relations and could have serious consequences for regional peace.

What Happens Next?

If PM Modi accepts the Congress’ request, it would be the first special session of Parliament convened for a terror attack response in many years.

Such a session could allow all political parties to:

  • Express national solidarity.

  • Discuss stronger counter-terrorism strategies.

  • Debate India’s next steps diplomatically and militarily.

At this moment, the country awaits the Prime Minister’s decision, as grief, anger, and a demand for unity surge across the nation.

 A Nation United Against Terror

The horrifying Pahalgam attack has once again reminded India of the lurking terror threats across its borders.
The calls for a special session highlight a rare moment of unity in India’s often divided political landscape.

Whether or not the government convenes Parliament early, one thing is clear — India stands determined to act and defend its people.
