UPI Down for Several Users Across India: Third Outage in 30 Days Sparks Concern

Millions of Indians woke up on Saturday morning to find themselves facing yet another hurdle in their daily online transactions as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) was hit by a huge technical glitch — the third in the last 30 days. The bug shut down transaction services on top digital payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm, causing widespread resentment and bringing into focus the dependability of India’s most widely used digital payments system.

The problem started to emerge in the early hours of the day, with customers using social media to report declined transactions, hanging payments, and non-responsive apps. By 12:56 PM, the website DownDetector, which monitors service outages in real-time, had reported more than 2,147 complaints, with about 80% of the users reporting that they were having problems making payments. Earlier that morning, more than 1,168 complaints of a similar nature had already been made, indicating a sudden increase in customer complaints.

A Systemic Disruption
The outage wasn’t limited to a single payment gateway or app. Rather, it was indicative of a more systemic problem, with large financial institutions — HDFC Bank, State Bank of India (SBI), Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Bank of Baroda — being affected too. For small merchants, e-commerce transactions, ride-hailing, food delivery, and even peer-to-peer transactions, the glitch caused delays, lost sales, and customer annoyance.

This is the third UPI disruption within a month — an unprecedented frequency for a payment system that boasts almost instantaneous transactions and 24×7 availability. The frequent disruptions have now triggered worries among consumers and industry players alike regarding the scalability and infrastructure preparedness of India’s UPI ecosystem.

Business and Daily Life Affected
For most Indians, UPI has become the lifeline of daily commerce — from purchasing vegetables from a neighborhood market to paying for an early morning chai. Small vendors in metros and towns had to demand payment in cash or turn people back on Saturday. They reported sharp drops in sales in the peak morning hours.

It’s really frustrating,” Anuj Sinha, an owner of a grocery store in Mumbai, said. “Customers want fast service, and UPI is the easiest way. When that doesn’t work, I lose business.

Frequent users of Google Pay and PhonePe also reported that transactions were stuck in a pending state or outright failed, even though money was deducted from accounts in some cases. Refunds and reversals took hours or were delayed, adding to user distress.

NPCI’s Role and Recent Announcements
National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates the UPI infrastructure, has not made an official statement about Saturday’s disruption. Yet, users are calling for more transparency and accountability, particularly given the importance of UPI in India’s vision of a cashless economy.

Interestingly, this blackout follows closely a significant policy shift by NPCI. At the beginning of this week, effective April 8, the organization stated that international UPI transactions via QR codes would be capped to enhance payer identification and improve security. Though this step is taken to facilitate cross-border payments, QR-based domestic payments within India are unaffected — at least on paper.

But with these repeated outages, users are now starting to wonder if infrastructure upgrades and security enhancements are being achieved at the expense of reliability.

Social Media Responses and User Frustration
Predictably enough, social media sites like X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, and Instagram were buzzing with complaints, memes, and furious rants. Hashtags like #UPIDown, #PhonePeNotWorking, and #GPayCrash went viral throughout the day, with numerous users tagging the NPCI and digital payment apps, calling for explanations.

One user complained, “It’s 2025 and I still need to carry cash since UPI goes down every weekend now. What’s the point of being a digital-first economy?”

Another ranted, “I missed my Uber because I couldn’t pay on time. Thanks again, UPI!”

Though most comments were laced with sarcasm, the sentiment was clear: Users are losing faith.

The Bigger Picture
India’s UPI system, introduced in 2016, has been a world model for real-time, interoperable digital payments. It now handles more than 13 billion transactions each month, amounting to trillions of rupees. It has democratized digital finance, enrolling even the humblest roadside vendors in the digital mainstream.

But with the growth comes also added pressure on infrastructure. The more financial institutions, fintech companies, and end users pick up UPI, the system is beginning to feel the heat. Experts estimate that backend infrastructure, such as server bandwidth, redundancy protocols, and disaster recovery mechanisms, should be upgraded at the earliest.

“UPI is a great innovation, but scale without strength is a risk,” said Rahul Agarwal, a fintech analyst. “Three outages in 30 days is not just an inconvenience — it’s a red flag.”

Since India is planning to take UPI to international markets and connect it to global payment networks, dependability at home takes on greater significance. For a system that has earned the trust of more than 300 million people, every failure erodes confidence.

Consumers and merchants alike are now calling for an explicit roadmap from the NPCI on how it intends to solve the repeated problems, enhance system uptime, and notify outages in real time.

Until then, many Indians might find themselves falling back — at least to some extent — to cash, just because the tap on the screen no longer always assures a payment.
