Bill Gates on Hustle, AI, and Retirement at 40 in Deep Talk with Zerodha’s Nikhil Kamath

Billionaire opens up about working hard, AI’s impact, and why being ‘equal’ isn’t human nature

A Billionaire, A Startup Star, and A Deep Conversation

In the latest episode of the People by WTF podcast, Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath sat down once again with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates for a compelling conversation covering AI, capitalism, philanthropy, and even a surprising take on retiring by 40.

The second part of their podcast dropped on YouTube on April 11, and it’s already going viral for Gates’ blunt honesty and futuristic views.

Kamath didn’t hold back. At one point, he directly asked Gates:

“You always seem to be in a hurry when you’re in India. Why are you running around so much?”

And Gates’ response? Pure insight.

“You Better Be Hard on Yourself”

When asked if he’s too hard on himself, Gates gave a surprisingly relatable answer:

“It’s a lot of fun. No, I think if you want to work hard and not fool yourself, you better be pretty hard on yourself.”

Despite being one of the world’s richest and most successful individuals, Gates emphasized the importance of self-discipline and accountability, revealing that even billionaires aren’t immune to burnout—but they still push through.

Why Gates Keeps Coming Back to India

Gates has visited India numerous times, engaging with key leaders including:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi

  • Union Health Minister JP Nadda

  • Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri

  • Minister of Science and Technology Jitendra Singh

His trips usually involve philanthropic efforts, discussions on healthcare, technology, and now increasingly, AI. His most recent visit was just last month.

Is a Huge Population a Boon or Bane?

Nikhil Kamath asked a bold question:

“From a capitalist lens, is a large population a good or bad thing?”

Gates acknowledged the complexity, pointing out that AI is likely to reshape society within the next two decades. He suggested that as automation and AI become more common, people may have more free time, prompting a major shift in how we think about work and life.

“You know, you can retire early, you can work shorter work weeks. It’s gonna require almost a philosophical rethink about how time should be spent,” Gates said.

What If You Never Had to Work?

Kamath pressed further—what would people do if they didn’t have to work?

Gates responded with a mic-drop moment:

“I don’t have to work. I choose to work.”

This statement underlined the psychological shift that could come with AI-led economies, where choice replaces necessity in careers.

He added that while retiring at 40 may soon become the norm, the idea of never working at all still feels “so different” and unnatural.

Segregation Without Status? A New Social Order?

Kamath then touched on a deep topic: if AI replaces labor, how will society define value?

He mused that we may create a new social hierarchy, different from today’s system based on jobs and income. Gates agreed that human beings naturally seek structure and distinction.

“The idea of pure communism—that everybody is totally the same—is a pretty unnatural behaviour for humans,” Gates said.

His take? Equality doesn’t mean sameness. People will always find ways to differentiate, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Can You Want to Make Money and Still Be a Philanthropist?

Kamath also asked Gates about a long-standing contradiction:

“How does it make sense to want to make money while also giving it away?”

Gates explained that for him, philanthropy and capitalism are not mutually exclusive. The idea is to use wealth as a tool—first to build, then to give back.

It’s the mindset that drives the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the largest private charitable foundations in the world.

Nikhil Kamath and Bill Gates: Podcast Origins

Kamath launched the People by WTF podcast series in 2023, with Bill Gates as his first-ever guest. Since then, the show has featured high-profile thinkers and innovators, but Gates remains one of the most-watched interviews

Summary of Key Quotes

Question/Topic Bill Gates’ View
Why always in a hurry? “It’s fun. You have to be hard on yourself to work hard.”
Is a big population good? “AI will change that. People will have more free time.”
Do we need to work at all? “I don’t have to work. I choose to work.”
Retiring early “Retirement at 40 could become normal.”
New societal structure “Equality doesn’t mean everyone is the same. That’s unnatural.”
Making money vs. philanthropy “Not a contradiction. Use wealth to do good.”

 Why This Conversation Matters

This isn’t just a conversation between two billionaires—it’s a window into the future of work, wealth, and society.

Whether it’s AI replacing jobs, the rise of early retirement, or how people assign value without careers, Gates and Kamath are raising questions we’ll all face sooner than we think.

And perhaps the biggest lesson? Even the richest man in the room chooses to keep working—not because he has to, but because he wants to.
