The G20 Leaders’ Summit, held in New Delhi under India’s presidency, concluded with resounding success, according to the United States. Matthew Miller, the spokesperson for the US State Department, expressed their belief in the summit’s success during a press briefing. Emphasizing the significance of the G20 as a large and diverse organization that includes members like Russia and China, Miller addressed questions about the summit’s effectiveness.
One notable aspect of the summit was Russia’s absence from the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration. When questioned about this omission, Miller underscored the importance of the declaration’s content, which called for the respect of territorial integrity and sovereignty while condemning any violations of these principles. He highlighted that these principles were at the core of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, making the declaration’s stance crucial.
In the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, the G20 nations collectively asserted the inadmissibility of the “use or threat of use of nuclear weapons.” While not directly naming Russia, they referred to the Bali declaration and stressed the need for all states to act in accordance with the UN Charter’s Purposes and Principles. The declaration also called for a “comprehensive, just, and durable peace in Ukraine” and urged member states to refrain from using force to seek territorial acquisition.
The G20 affirmed its role as the premier forum for international economic cooperation in the New Delhi Declaration, clarifying that it primarily focuses on economic matters but acknowledges that geopolitical and security issues can impact the global economy. The member countries called on all states to uphold international law principles such as territorial integrity, sovereignty, international humanitarian law, and the multilateral system that promotes peace and stability.
The declaration stressed the importance of peaceful conflict resolution, crisis management, diplomacy, and dialogue. It highlighted the need to address the adverse economic impact of the war in Ukraine and welcomed constructive initiatives that support a just and lasting peace in accordance with the UN Charter’s principles.
