Following the disappearance of a military plane carrying former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri and vice president Saulos Chilima, among others, soldiers in Malawi have begun a search and rescue operation in the rugged jungles close to a northern city. President Lazarus Chakwera said that the aircraft, which took off from Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, was redirected to Mzuzu International Airport because of bad weather.

Among the passengers onboard were military crew members and former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri, the ex-wife of former President Bakili Muluzi. The group was en route to attend the funeral of a former government minister, highlighting the tragic circumstances surrounding the flight.
Vice President Saulos Chilima, who has held office since 2020, has been embroiled in controversy, including corruption allegations that were recently dropped by prosecutors.
