Why Berkshire Hathaway’s stock fell 99%.

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) stopped trading on approximately 40 equities and displayed incorrect trades, displaying a 99% decline in businesses such as Berkshire Hathaway Inc., due to a software malfunction that occurred during an early Monday update. The problem was fixed in forty-five minutes when the Consolidated Tape Association (CTA), which is run by a NYSE subsidiary, moved to a backup data center that uses a different software version. This is the third disruption to the market in a week.

At $185.10, a considerable decrease from the previous closing of $627,400, about a dozen trades in Berkshire Hathaway Class A shares were completed. Other equities, such as NuScale Power Corp., were impacted by similar inaccuracies. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) declared that it would suspend trading at or below $603,718.30 from 9:50 a.m. to 9:51 a.m. and that it is examining additional halts for possible cancellations.

The Securities Information Processor (SIP), which aggregates bid and ask quotes from many exchanges, displays opening prices. This is where the problem started. The SIP was implemented with new software. As a result, trading halted due to incorrect limit up-limit down bands.

The bug was fixed by the CTA in a backup data center by switching back to an earlier software version. The event had no effect on equities listed on the Nasdaq and had no effect on the overall market.

After a week of technological problems, which included a fault on Thursday that prevented the S&P 500 Index from having live pricing for an hour and another issue that affected an exchange’s data feed two days earlier, this disruption has occurred. The US stock exchanges’ shift to one-day settlements (T+1) coinciding with these accidents highlights the necessity of a reliable and error-free trading system.

Experts that questioned the NYSE’s explanation and wanted more information about the root issues included Joe Saluzzi and Jonathan Corpina. Though he thought they were probably coincidental, Interactive Brokers’ Steve Sosnick observed that the recent consecutive malfunctions were uncommon.
