Examining the funding for the Us presidential campaign in 2024

President Joe Biden has continuously raised more money for his campaign than his opponent, Donald Trump, in the US presidential contest. But this pattern changed recently as the Trump campaign raised an unprecedented amount of money. At a donor gathering in Palm Beach, Florida, in April, Trump raised more money than Biden did for the first time, taking in over $50 million, according to Reuters.

Typically, individual donors and committees closely connected to a political party provide funding to campaigns. The amount that political organizations and individuals can contribute to each election is limited by the Federal Election Campaign Act. Candidates must disclose their funders, the total amount contributed by each organization, and the expenditure of the funds. The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is in charge of regulating this procedure by keeping a database of campaign finances.

Unlike contributions, there is no cap on campaign spending in the United States. In a State Department briefing, University of Massachusetts political science professor Ray La Raja clarified that, according to the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the First Amendment, no law can restrict political financing. According to this understanding, political spending by organizations and people is unrestricted.

An analysis of the financial summary for the 2024 election campaign season shows how much money each contender raised. Nearly $195 million in receipts are shown in Biden’s FEC financial summary, which covers data from January 1, 2021, to April 30, 2024. Trump’s financial summary shows little over $124 million in revenue for the period of November 15, 2022, to April 30, 2024.

When it comes to individual contributions, Biden has greatly outperformed Trump. Compared to Trump’s $1 million, Biden has received $71 million from individual contributions. Nevertheless, committees outside of the party committee that are directly connected to Trump’s political party have given him more significant backing. From these other committees, Trump has earned more than $200,000—more than three times what Biden has.

A closer look of the data reveals the variations in their approved committees. A designated campaign committee must be authorized by each presidential contender to manage funding and expenditures. Biden for President, his approved committee, raised almost $180 million in funds between January 1, 2023, and April 30, 2024. Donald J. Trump for President 2024, Inc., Trump’s approved committee, has raised roughly $120 million during the same period.

Spending on campaigns is yet another important facet of the economy. With almost $100 million in expenditures since January 1, 2023, Biden has outspent Trump, who has only spent approximately $75 million. Both campaigns’ expenses are for a variety of things. Trump has incurred substantial fees for media production, legal advice, and postal services. More recently, he has also incurred charges for ground transportation, such as Uber rides. Likewise, media production and digital consulting are among Biden’s highest costs, with recent additions for contribution refunds.
