Macquarie Asset Management (MAM), one of Australia’s biggest investment firms, recently sold its Aligned Data Centers business for a staggering $40 billion. But this huge deal doesn’t mean the data center boom is slowing down — far from it. In fact, Macquarie’s leadership says the future looks brighter than ever for AI and data infrastructure.

Who Is Macquarie and What Is Aligned Data Centers?

Aligned Data Centers grew to become one of the world’s largest data center operators under Macquarie’s ownership over seven years. These massive facilities provide the power and storage needed by companies running everything from cloud services to artificial intelligence.

The sale was made to investors like BlackRock, Microsoft, and Nvidia — some of the biggest names in tech and finance — showing just how valuable these data centers have become.

Why Did Macquarie Sell Aligned?

Ben Way, head of Macquarie Asset Management, explained that selling Aligned wasn’t about the market cooling off or a lack of confidence. It was a strategic exit after seven successful years. Macquarie believes the data center market and AI infrastructure are still just getting started.

“We don’t own businesses forever,” Way said. “Aligned was at a great spot to exit, and there’s clearly massive demand for these assets.”

The AI and Data Center Boom Isn’t Over

While many worry about a tech bubble, Macquarie remains confident. As global companies ramp up investments in AI and data centers, demand for powerful chips and infrastructure keeps soaring. Morgan Stanley estimates that tech giants like Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and others will spend $400 billion on AI infrastructure in 2025 alone.

Aligned currently operates about 5 gigawatts of data center capacity, with more planned for the future. This scale helps fuel the AI engines behind some of the world’s leading technology.

What’s Next for Macquarie?

Macquarie isn’t stepping back from the digital future. The company announced a fresh $5 billion partnership with Applied Digital to fund new high-performance computing data centers, which are critical for advanced AI work.

Ben Way emphasized, “We’re at the beginning of this digital transformation and AI journey — definitely not at the end.”

Macquarie’s Growing Data Center Portfolio

Even after selling Aligned, Macquarie continues to hold stakes in other data center companies around the world, including Bohao Internet Data Service, Hanam Data Centre, Netrality Data Centers, and VIRTUS. These investments span major markets like the U.S., UK, China, and South Korea.

What This Means for the Industry and Investors

The Aligned sale shows that private equity firms see enormous value in data centers and AI infrastructure. The deal is the largest private equity exit ever for Macquarie, highlighting how important these assets have become.

For investors and tech watchers, this deal signals that the race to build the backbone of tomorrow’s internet and AI-powered world is accelerating, not slowing down.

Final Thoughts

Macquarie’s $40 billion sale of Aligned Data Centers isn’t a sign of retreat — it’s a confident step forward. The company’s leaders believe we’re just scratching the surface of the digital transformation driven by AI and data infrastructure. With major investments still pouring in worldwide, the future of tech is powered by data centers — and that future looks massive.
