Making a blistering speech at a public rally in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday mounted a virulent attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and opposition parties for their silence over the recent bloodshed in Murshidabad. The bloodshed, in which at least three persons have been killed, has raised nationwide concern, and Adityanath spared no words in blaming the West Bengal government for the reported lawlessness.

Blaming the Mamata Banerjee government for remaining silent on the violence, Adityanath remarked, “West Bengal is burning. The state CM is mute and refers to rioters as peacemakers. This is not governance; this is surrendering to anarchy.”

Condemnation of ‘Selective Silence’
The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister did not stop at attacking Mamata Banerjee. He also launched stinging jibes at the Congress and the Samajwadi Party for their hypocrisy and double standards in keeping mum on the subject.

Why are the so-called secular parties keeping mum today?” Adityanath asked, speaking to the audience. “Where are those who shout slogans about human rights and democracy when innocent people’s lives are being taken by violent mobs? This selective silence is revealing their true character.

He added that opposition merely decides to speak up only when it would benefit their political agendas. “This is not secularism; this is vote-bank politics at its worst,” he commented.

‘Only a Stick Can Tame Rioters’
Emphasizing the requirement of firm action, Adityanath declared, “Laato ke bhoot baaton se nahi maante” — that robust, decisive action is required to tackle such culprits. He called for prompt and firm policing against rioters, claiming that a soft touch merely encouraged miscreants.

“Riots have to be handled with an iron hand. Law and order cannot be neglected. In Uttar Pradesh, we have demonstrated that peace and progress are achievable only when there is zero tolerance towards violence. The same needs to be emulated in Bengal,” Adityanath further stated.

Murshidabad Violence: What Happened?
The Murshidabad violence, reported from West Bengal’s most communally sensitive district, started more than a week back and gained momentum in no time, claiming three lives and injuring many others. In local reports, the reason for this tension was said to have been a religious procession, which caused clashes between two groups of people.

Shops were looted, homes set on fire, and there were shocking reports of police inaction in many areas hit by the violence. In spite of the appalling images coming from the ground zero, the West Bengal government has till now adopted a cautious approach, with very few public utterances on the subject. This perceived lack of action has been criticized by several quarters, including opposition parties and social observers.

An Appeal for National Unity
Addressing the rally, Adityanath contextualized the problem not only as a law and order issue but as a danger to the nation’s unity and integrity.

“The fires of Murshidabad are an alert for all. If governments go on protecting rioters in the garb of minority appeasement, it is not only that state but the entire nation that will be afflicted,” he said.

He reminded everyone of the social cohesion that India has always valued and blamed the opposition for “playing with fire” for political motives.

Political Fallout and BJP’s Strategy
This growth is being interpreted as part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s wider political messaging as it seeks to present itself as the custodian of national harmony and law and order. The 2024 Lok Sabha polls being still within political memory and state polls lined up in many states in the next two years, the BJP seems to be refocusing on governance and domestic security issues.

Adityanath’s remarks are also a message to party cadre and the voters that the BJP is serious about taking on what it perceives as the misgovernance and appeasement politics of its opponents.

Mamata’s Response Awaited
So far, there has been no official reaction from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over Adityanath’s remarks. While sources in the Trinamool Congress have rubbished allegations as “politically motivated” and a move to “communalize a sensitive issue for electoral purposes.”

The observers think that Banerjee will soon need to respond to the situation in public, particularly in the wake of building pressure and the shots of violence going viral on social media.

The Bigger Picture
The clash between Yogi Adityanath and Mamata Banerjee is emblematic of the wider political divide in the country. While the BJP continues to pitch itself as the party of strong governance and national security, regional parties like the TMC position themselves as defenders of pluralism and regional identity.

However, instances like the Murshidabad violence put regional governments on the defensive, particularly when law and order issues cross over communal fault lines.

As India goes through the challenges of its multicultural populace, the need for responsible rule, regardless of political leanings, becomes more imperative. The hour of the need, as Adityanath stressed, is for leaders to transcend political interests and usher in peace, justice, and accountability for every citizen.
