An update on her cancer and chemotherapy is provided by Kate Middleton: “It’s not over yet”

Catherine, Princess of Wales, has provided an update on her health, stating that she is making “good progress” with her chemotherapy treatment. In a rare public statement, the former Kate Middleton shared details about her journey since being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. Her diagnosis came to light in March, following a planned abdominal surgery in January. At that time, she revealed that she was in the “early stages” of preventative chemotherapy, aimed at preventing the cancer from returning.

After disclosing her illness, Catherine has not discussed her cancer treatment until recently, when she made this statement. She disclosed that she still has “a few more months” of chemotherapy to go, and that she had “good days and bad days” while undergoing treatment. She stressed that she has noticed a big improvement as a result of the support she has gotten. After receiving supportive and encouraging letters after her diagnosis, Catherine expressed her gratitude. “Thank you so much for your continued understanding, and to all of you who have so bravely shared your stories with me,” she continued. Her remarks emphasize how crucial support systems and a sense of community are while dealing with major health issues.

Accompanying her statement, the palace released a new photograph of the princess. In the image, Catherine is seen wearing jeans and a tan blazer, looking pensive as she stands against a tree. This photograph, taken by Matt Porteous, captures her serene yet contemplative mood during this challenging time. The photograph reflects her strength and resilience even as she navigates the difficulties of her treatment.

In her message, the princess detailed her experiences with chemotherapy, noting that while she has made good progress, the journey has not been without its challenges. “I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days,” she said. “On those bad days, you feel weak, tired, and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.” This balance between rest and engagement reflects her approach to maintaining a semblance of normalcy while undergoing treatment.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak responded to the princess’s statement with a message of encouragement. He acknowledged the significance of her words for those battling cancer, saying, “The Princess of Wales’ statement will be especially meaningful to those who are fighting cancer and for their families. They will recognize the same struggle in her words and draw hope and inspiration from her strength.” Sunak’s support underscores the broader impact of Catherine’s openness about her health journey. He added, “I know the whole country is behind her.”

Additionally, Catherine affirmed that her treatment is still in progress and will be for a few more months. She stressed the value of paying attention to her body’s signals and giving herself the space and time she needs to heal. “On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home,” she stated. “Ongoing” means that her treatment will carry on for “a few more months,” according to her statement. Her strategy for preserving some sense of normalcy throughout therapy is shown in this balance between rest and participation.

In her statement, Catherine also mentioned her plans to attend King Charles III’s birthday parade, known as Trooping the Colour, with her family on June 15. She expressed hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, while acknowledging that she is “not out of the woods yet.” A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace shared that King Charles is “delighted that The Princess is able to attend tomorrow’s events, and is much looking forward to all elements of the day.” This participation marks her first public appearance since her family’s annual Christmas church outing in 2023, and it holds significant symbolic value.

King Charles III has also faced health challenges this year, having undergone treatment for an unspecified form of cancer. The palace announced his diagnosis in February, and he returned to official duties in April. This shared experience of illness within the royal family adds a layer of relatability and solidarity in the face of health struggles. The princess has not participated in royal appearances since her family’s annual Christmas church outing in 2023. Trooping the Colour will be the first royal event she has attended since, though she previously took time to review a report from an initiative she’s involved in, The Royal Foundation Business Taskforce for Early Childhood, a senior palace aid confirmed in May. She has been working from home occasionally, including some meetings when she feels well enough.

Catherine is a shining example of resilience and strength because of her openness about her condition and her appreciation for the public’s support. Her emphasis on optimism, family, and community as she gets through this trying time sends a strong message of hope and tenacity. Many others have found great resonance in Catherine’s account of her chemotherapy journey and her public updates. Her openness to open up about her experiences—both the highs and lows—provides encouragement and support to anyone going through comparable struggles. Her priorities while she proceeds with her treatment include still mending, accepting uncertainty with patience, and savoring the times when she feels well.
