Unsafe Hostel Food? Razor Blade, Worms, and Glass Found in University Mess Meals
Osmania University Students Protest After Razor Blade Found in Hostel Food
A Disturbing Discovery at Osmania University
Students of Osmania University, Hyderabad, staged a massive protest on Tuesday night after a shocking incident – a razor blade was allegedly found in a curry served for dinner at the New Godavari hostel mess.
The furious students blocked the university’s main road, holding up the contaminated food in protest while chanting slogans against the administration. The incident has sparked widespread concern about food safety and hygiene in university hostels.
Not an Isolated Incident – Recurring Food Safety Issues
According to protesting students, this is not the first time such a dangerous foreign object has been found in the hostel food.
Previous complaints include:
. Worms in cabbage curry – Found just two days before the razor blade incident.
. Glass pieces in food – Reported earlier by students.
. Unhygienic cooking conditions – Repeated complaints ignored.
Students alleged that despite raising multiple complaints in the past, the university authorities failed to take action, allowing food safety violations to continue.
Students Demand Action from the University
The protesters are demanding a direct response from Vice Chancellor Prof. M Kumar, urging the university to take immediate corrective measures.
Chelimela Druhan, an MA Philosophy student and president of Osmania University ABVP, stated:
“Every time we raise complaints, the mess staff assures us it won’t happen again. But the problems keep recurring. Students’ health is at serious risk!”
Expensive Fees, Poor Quality Food
Despite being charged ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 per month for hostel meals, students claim they are receiving substandard and unsafe food.
. Mess staff allegedly not following schedules, forcing students to serve themselves, especially during dinner.
. No accountability despite repeated complaints.
. University administration remains silent, failing to address concerns.
Water Shortages Adding to the Crisis
Beyond food issues, students are also struggling with irregular water supply in the hostels.
Key Water Supply Issues:
. Unreliable water tankers – Students don’t know the source of the water.
. Frequent illnesses reported – Poor water quality affecting students’ health.
. Demand for borewells – Students want the administration to install a permanent water source instead of relying on external tankers.
Similar Incidents in Other Universities
Osmania University isn’t the only institution facing food safety concerns.
In February, students at Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) in Telangana reported falling ill after consuming food from the college canteen. The administration, however, blamed outside food, claiming only 27 students were affected.
Such cases highlight a larger issue of food safety negligence in educational institutions across India.
What Happens Next? Students Await Action
Students are now demanding urgent action from the administration, including:
. Strict quality checks in hostel messes.
. Accountability for food safety violations.
. Better hygiene standards in food preparation..
. Improved water supply for hostels.
With rising anger among students, the university authorities must respond quickly before the situation escalates further.
A Wake-Up Call for Universities
This disturbing incident at Osmania University is a wake-up call for universities across India. Educational institutions must prioritize student health and safety, ensuring strict food quality checks and hygienic living conditions.
With students now raising their voices, will the university administration finally take action? Or will these serious concerns continue to be ignored
