Kunal Kamra Summoned by Mumbai Police Over Eknath Shinde Parody

Mumbai Police have issued a summons to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra for his allegedly controversial remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The move follows a complaint by Shiv Sena MLA Mangesh Kudalkar and has ignited a debate on free speech versus political sensitivities. Kamra, currently in Puducherry, has stated that he will cooperate with the investigation but refuses to apologize.

Why Was Kunal Kamra Summoned?

Kamra is facing legal trouble after making a satirical remark about Eknath Shinde during one of his stand-up comedy shows. A Zero FIR was initially registered at MIDC police station before being transferred to Khar police station. Following this, a team from Khar police station delivered the summons at Kamra’s Mumbai residence, where his parents reside. Since he was out of town, police also sent the notice via WhatsApp.

Complaint by Shiv Sena Leader

Shiv Sena MLA Mangesh Kudalkar lodged a complaint at the Kurla Nehrunagar police station, urging authorities to take action against Kamra. The Shiv Sena has also demanded an unconditional apology from the comedian, claiming that his remarks were derogatory and offensive towards the Deputy CM.

Political Tension & Vandalism

This controversy has led to increased tensions in Mumbai. Supporters of the ruling party allegedly vandalized the Unicontinental Hotel, where Kamra’s comedy show was filmed. In response, Khar police have booked Yuva Sena General Secretary Rahool Kanal and others under multiple sections of the BNS and the Maharashtra Police Act.

Police Investigation and Action

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 9), Dixit Gedam, confirmed that two separate cases have been registered:

  • One against Kamra for his remarks.
  • Another against individuals involved in vandalizing the venue.
The investigation is ongoing, and further legal action is expected.

Kamra’s Response: ‘I Will Not Apologize’

Refusing to back down, Kamra took to X (formerly Twitter) late Monday night to defend his right to free speech. He stated that his joke was merely repeating what Deputy CM Ajit Pawar had previously said about Eknath Shinde.

Kamra’s Statement on Free Speech

In his post, Kamra wrote:
“Our right to freedom of speech and expression is not only used to praise the powerful. Your inability to take a joke does not change my right. It is not illegal to poke fun at our leaders and their political circus.”

While Kamra has agreed to cooperate with the police and courts, he questioned whether the law would be applied fairly to those who resorted to vandalism in response to his joke.

BMC Crackdown & Mumbai’s Comedy Scene Under Threat?

Kamra further alleged that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took action against Habitat, a popular entertainment venue, by demolishing parts of it without prior notice. He sarcastically suggested that for his next show, he might perform under Mumbai’s deteriorating Elphinstone Bridge, given how quickly authorities acted against the comedy club.

Attacking Comedy Venues: A Dangerous Precedent?

Kamra criticized the targeting of venues for the content of a comedian’s performance. “Attacking a venue for a comedian’s words is as senseless as overturning a lorry carrying tomatoes because you didn’t like the butter chicken you were served,” he remarked.

Opposition Slams Government Over Selective Action

While the ruling Shiv Sena demands an apology from Kamra, the opposition has criticized the state government for its swift action against the comedian while allegedly protecting those who insult historical figures like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This selective legal enforcement has intensified political debates in Maharashtra.

 Free Speech vs. Political Power

The case against Kunal Kamra raises crucial questions about the boundaries of free speech in India. While political satire has long been an integral part of democratic discourse, the legal and physical backlash against comedians is setting a concerning precedent. Kamra’s refusal to apologize underscores the ongoing struggle between artistic freedom and political power. As the legal battle unfolds, the debate over humor, criticism, and political intolerance in India is only set to grow.
