Coimbatore College in Shock After Assault Video Surfaces

A shocking case of student violence has emerged from Tamil Nadu’s Nehru Institute of Technology in Coimbatore, where a senior undergraduate student was brutally assaulted by a group of juniors over an alleged theft. The incident, which took place on March 20, led to the suspension of 13 first-year students.

Disturbing Video Shows Assault

A 1.42-minute-long video, which has surfaced online but has not been independently verified by NDTV, shows the disturbing act of violence. In the footage, the bare-chested senior student is seen kneeling with his hands raised, surrounded by a group of students inside what appears to be a hostel room. Despite his visible pain and repeated pleas, his attackers refuse to relent.

At one point, the victim collapses, complaining of severe pain in his left hand, but the group continues to pressure him to comply. The video has sparked widespread outrage, raising concerns about student safety on college campuses.

College Administration Takes Swift Action

Dr. Maheswaran, the Deputy Chief Warden of the institute, confirmed the shocking incident and assured that immediate steps were taken.

“The Principal and Chief Warden have formed an inquiry committee to investigate the matter. The 13 students involved have been identified and suspended. We have also informed the police,” he stated.

Additionally, the suspended students and their parents have been summoned for an inquiry scheduled for March 24. The college administration has assured strict action to prevent such incidents in the future.

Police Launch Criminal Investigation

Following the college’s action, the Coimbatore district police have also initiated a criminal case against the accused students. A senior police officer confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings.

Is Campus Violence on the Rise?

This incident has reignited the debate on ragging and student violence in Indian colleges. While some argue that strict anti-ragging laws have helped curb such incidents, cases like these prove that the problem still exists in certain institutions.

What Can Colleges Do to Prevent Such Incidents?

  • Strict Monitoring: Colleges must strengthen CCTV surveillance in hostels and common areas.
  • Zero-Tolerance Policy: Institutions should adopt a no-compromise approach to student violence.
  • Counseling & Awareness Programs: Regular anti-ragging workshops can help create awareness among students.
  • Swift Legal Action: Colleges must report such cases to authorities immediately to ensure justice.

 Ensuring Campus Safety

The Nehru Institute of Technology’s swift action in suspending the accused students and alerting the police sets a strong example for other institutions. However, it also highlights the urgent need for stricter campus security measures to prevent such acts of violence.
