Mizoram Church Urges Families to Have More Babies to Strengthen Faith

The Baptist Church of Mizoram (BCM), the second-largest church denomination in the state, has made a significant appeal to its members: have more children to secure the future of Mizoram and strengthen the Christian faith.

Why is the Church Encouraging a Baby Boom?

During the 129th assembly, the highest decision-making body of the BCM, delegates expressed concerns over the declining population among the Mizos. They unanimously agreed that reversing this trend would be beneficial not only for the state’s development but also for preserving religious and cultural values.

“If the Mizos continue to witness a population decline, the consequences could be disastrous in the near future,” the assembly delegates warned. They emphasized that a shrinking population could adversely affect society, governance, and the church’s influence.

A Broader Trend Among Mizoram’s Churches

The BCM is not alone in its call for larger families. The Mizoram Presbyterian Church, the largest denomination in the state, has also previously encouraged married couples to have more children. Both churches believe that a strong, growing Christian population will help sustain religious institutions and uphold cultural traditions.

Tackling Social Challenges: Drug Abuse, HIV/AIDS, and Corruption

Beyond the population agenda, the assembly also focused on combating pressing social issues. Delegates expressed deep concern over rampant drug addiction and the spread of HIV/AIDS, which have led to the deaths of many young people in Mizoram.

To address these challenges, the assembly decided that all local churches should form committees dedicated to tackling these social problems. The committees will focus on:

  • Spreading awareness about the dangers of drug abuse
  • Educating communities on HIV/AIDS prevention
  • Promoting moral and ethical values to curb corruption

Political Involvement: A Controversial Decision

A proposal seeking to impose a lifetime ban on retired Baptist church pastors from entering politics was rejected by the assembly. The idea was initially introduced to ensure that pastors remained focused on their religious calling. However, the delegates concluded that preventing retired pastors from joining politics was unnecessary.

At the same time, the assembly expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of political parties, stating that many of them have failed to live up to public expectations despite their promises to serve the people.

BCM’s Stand on Religious Alliances

The Baptist Church of Mizoram has also taken a firm stance on religious alliances. It previously decided to exit the Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a group of 16 major church denominations. Additionally, BCM declined an invitation to join the Mizoram Presbyterian Church-led Mizoram People’s Forum (MPF), an election watchdog that includes civil societies. The church has not publicly stated its reasons for distancing itself from these organizations.

The Impact of This Decision

The BCM’s call for a baby boom is expected to spark discussions across Mizoram. While some may support the initiative as a way to preserve faith and strengthen community bonds, others may question whether population growth should be a church-driven agenda in the modern world.

As Mizoram continues to navigate social and economic challenges, the role of religious institutions in shaping societal values remains significant. Whether this call for larger families will influence population trends in the state remains to be seen.
