Money Laundering Twist: Actor Mahesh Babu Summoned by ED Over ₹11.4 Crore Ads Deal

Money Laundering Twist: Actor Mahesh Babu Summoned by ED Over ₹11.4 Crore Ads Deal

Mahesh Babu Summoned by ED in ₹100 Crore Real Estate Scam Probe

Actor asked to appear for questioning over big ad payments from Surana Group and Sai Surya Developers

Hyderabad: Superstar Mahesh Babu has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as part of a major money laundering investigation linked to two real estate firms—Surana Group and Sai Surya Developers.

The ED wants the actor to appear for an inquiry on Sunday, after uncovering that he received over ₹11.4 crore from these companies for promotional activities. Authorities are now looking into whether this money was linked to illegal financial transactions.

Why Is Mahesh Babu Involved?

ED probing ₹11.4 crore payment to the actor for promotional work

According to sources, Mahesh Babu was paid:

  • ₹5.5 crore for appearing in advertisements for Surana Group

  • ₹5.9 crore from Sai Surya Developers, including:

    • ₹2.5 crore in cash

    • ₹3.4 crore via cheque

The ED will investigate the source of these funds and whether the actor’s payments were made using “proceeds of crime”—money earned from fraudulent activities.

While there is no suggestion yet that Mahesh Babu was directly involved in the alleged scam, the agency wants to determine if he unknowingly became part of the money laundering process.

Inside the Real Estate Scam

Surana Group and Sai Surya Developers under fire for defrauding investors

The ED’s investigation has so far exposed a massive real estate scam. Here’s what has been uncovered:

  • Illegal transactions worth ₹100 crore

  • ₹74.5 lakh in unaccounted cash seized

  • Multiple fake land sales to different buyers

  • Bogus plot registrations and false promises

  • Unauthorized layouts used to trick people

The accused are said to have cheated hundreds of innocent investors, taking huge advance payments for plots that either didn’t exist or were already sold.

Who Are the Main Accused?

Key suspects are top directors of Surana and Sai Surya

The ED’s investigation focuses on:

  • Narendra Surana, Chairman of Surana Group

  • Devendar Surana, Managing Director of the same group

  • K. Sathish Chandra Gupta, Proprietor of Sai Surya Developers

Officials say that fraudulent land schemes were run through Surana Group, Bhagyanagar Properties, and Sai Surya Developers. The companies reportedly:

  • Sold the same plots to multiple customers

  • Collected money without proper legal agreements

  • Made false assurances about land registration

Evidence Found During ED Raids

Multiple Hyderabad locations searched, fake documents and cash seized

As part of the crackdown, the ED conducted raids on four premises in Hyderabad and Secunderabad last Wednesday.

Searches were carried out at:

  • Residences of Narendra and Devendar Surana in Jubilee Hills and Bowenpally

  • Offices of Sai Surya Developers and other affiliated firms

Officials recovered:

  • Documents proving unauthorized land sales

  • Details of unaccounted transactions

  • Cash seizures amounting to ₹74.5 lakh

These findings are being used to track the money trail and understand how the illegal income was circulated or laundered.

ED’s Official Statement

Real estate firms accused of cheating with criminal intent

According to the Enforcement Directorate:

“ED initiated investigation on the basis of multiple FIRs filed by Telangana Police against key members of Bhagyanagar Properties, Surana Group, and Sai Surya Developers under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).”

The accused are alleged to have:

  • Carried out fake land schemes

  • Collected huge sums as advance payments

  • Provided no legitimate documentation or agreements

  • Caused severe financial loss to investors

  • Diverted and laundered the money for personal and business gain

The probe revealed that their actions were deliberate and planned, with a clear intent to cheat and defraud the public.

What Happens Next?

ED to grill Mahesh Babu; more names may come up

The ED is now focusing on:

  • Interrogating Mahesh Babu to understand his role, if any, in the transactions

  • Tracing the funds paid to him—especially the ₹2.5 crore in cash

  • Tracking the laundered money across accounts and businesses

  • Identifying other celebrities or influencers paid by the scam-linked firms

If the actor proves that he was unaware of the scam and was paid legally for legitimate promotional work, he may only be a witness in the case, not an accused.

However, if any involvement or knowledge of illegal transactions is found, it could complicate matters for him.

Bollywood and Real Estate: A Risky Mix?

Not the first time actors have been linked to financial scams

In recent years, several celebrities have found themselves unintentionally tangled in fraud cases:

  • Paid for endorsements by shell companies

  • Involved in brand deals that turn out to be money-laundering fronts

  • Becoming unwitting channels for laundering black money

As the ED and other agencies tighten their grip on financial crimes, stars and influencers are being advised to scrutinize all deals carefully, especially those involving large cash payments or non-transparent firms.

 Will Mahesh Babu Face Trouble?

It’s too early to say whether Mahesh Babu is in legal trouble. But this episode serves as a warning to celebrities and public figures: do your due diligence before signing brand deals.

For now, the actor’s appearance before the ED will be crucial in determining his exact role in the case. The money trail, especially the cash payment of ₹2.5 crore, will likely be at the center of the questioning.
