From Uri to Pahalgam: How India Hit Back Hard with Operation Sindoor

A Look at India’s Bold Responses to Terror in the Last Decade

Over the last nine years, India has faced multiple deadly terror attacks launched by Pakistan-based terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen. But each time, India has responded with military strength and strategic precision.

The latest retaliation—Operation Sindoor—launched on May 6, 2025, is India’s third major military strike against terror infrastructure across the Line of Control (LoC) and into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Let’s break it down and revisit the earlier strikes after Uri (2016) and Pulwama (2019).

 What Was Operation Sindoor?

A Retaliation to the Pahalgam Massacre

On April 22, 2025, terrorists linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba attacked a peaceful tourist area in Pahalgam, killing 26 civilians, including a Nepali national and a 70-year-old Indian retiree. The world watched in horror as what was once called “mini-Switzerland” turned into a scene of tragedy.

The Military Strikes Begin

Just 15 days later, at 1:44 AM on May 6, India launched a coordinated strike on nine terror camps across Pakistan and PoK. This included:

  • Training camps used in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks

  • Camps linked to the Pulwama and Pahalgam attacks

Weapons Used

India used advanced precision weapons:

  • SCALP missiles

  • HAMMER bombs

  • Loitering munitions (drone missiles that hover and strike with precision)

This strike was code-named “Operation Sindoor”, and it marked:

  • The first tri-services operation (involving Army, Navy, and Air Force) since the 1971 Indo-Pak war

  • A major escalation in India’s military doctrine

Casualties and Impact

While India hasn’t officially confirmed the number of terrorists killed, sources say the casualties were significant. Videos from Pakistani social media showed massive explosions, likely from precision bombs.

Pakistan retaliated with cross-border shelling, killing three civilians in Jammu & Kashmir.

Uri 2016: The First Surgical Strike

The Attack

On September 18, 2016, terrorists from Jaish-e-Mohammed attacked an Indian Army base near Uri, Jammu and Kashmir.

  • 19 Indian soldiers died

  • BBC called it the deadliest attack on Indian forces in two decades

India’s Surgical Strike

Just nine days later, Indian soldiers crossed the LoC to hit terror launchpads inside PoK.

  • The operation was termed a “pre-emptive strike”

  • Pakistan’s denials fell flat after India showed recovered equipment with Pak Army markings

Though official figures weren’t released, media reports suggested 100+ terrorists were eliminated.

 Pulwama 2019: The Turning Point

The Suicide Bombing

On February 14, 2019, a suicide bomber from Jaish-e-Mohammed, driving an explosive-laden Maruti Eeco, rammed into a CRPF convoy in Pulwama.

  • 40+ CRPF jawans were martyred

  • It was the worst attack on Indian forces in recent times

  • The bomber was identified as Adil Ahmad Dar, a local recruit

Balakot Air Strikes

On February 26, 2019, just 13 days after the attack, the Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out a surprise aerial strike across the LoC.

  • 12 Mirage 2000 fighter jets entered deep into Pakistan’s Balakot region

  • The operation lasted under 20 minutes

  • Spice 2000 bombs targeted Jaish training facilities, hitting six buildings

  • Reports suggest around 35 terrorists were killed

This was the first Indian air strike inside Pakistan since the 1971 war.

What Makes Operation Sindoor Unique?

1. **First Tri-Forces Operation Since 197- Army, Navy, and Air Force coordinated for a massive precision strike

  • Advanced missiles and AI-powered drone weapons were used

2. Targeted Response to Civilian Deaths

Unlike previous strikes triggered by military losses, Operation Sindoor was in response to civilian casualties, showing a shift in India’s policy.

3. Global Support and Deterrence

  • PM Modi declared that India would no longer tolerate terror from across the border

  • The strike sent a message not just to Pakistan, but to the global community, that India will act if threatened

 What’s Next

Possible Escalation

Sources suggest Operation Sindoor is just Phase 1. Depending on Pakistan’s reaction, India may launch further operations.

Civil Defense Preparedness

Before the strike, India conducted:

  • War games in Rajasthan

  • Civil defense drills across the country
These may have been strategic cover for the real operation.

 The Bigger Picture

From Uri to Pulwama to Pahalgam, India has shown a clear pattern:

  • Respond swiftly

  • Use high-precision weapons

  • Deliver a strong political message Each strike has made it harder for Pakistan to deny involvement. And now, with Operation Sindoor, India has upped the ante by targeting all three major terror outfits in a coordinated, modern warfare-style strike.
