Rafale Jets to Supercharge Indian Navy: Ex-Navy Chief Sounds Off on Strike Power and China’s Threat

India’s Naval Firepower Gets a Major Boost

India is all set to induct 26 state-of-the-art Rafale-M fighter jets into its Navy—a move that marks the biggest upgrade to its naval airpower in more than a decade. The ₹63,000 crore deal with France is expected to be finalized soon, and the jets will operate from India’s two aircraft carriers: INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya.

Former Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Arun Prakash, has hailed this move as a game-changer, saying the Rafales will add a “kinetic punch” to India’s striking power at sea.

Rafale-M: What’s Coming to the Indian Navy?

India’s Navy will receive:

  • 22 Rafale-M single-seater combat jets

  • 4 dual-seater trainer variants

This comes more than 10 years after the induction of the Russian MiG-29K, currently the Navy’s primary fighter jet. Compared to the MiG-29K, the Rafale-M is considered half a generation ahead in terms of electronic warfare, data fusion, and combat capabilities.

Why Rafale Means Business: Admiral Prakash Explains

Admiral Arun Prakash, speaking to NDTV, said:

“It’s going to add a huge punch to Indian Navy’s striking power — air defense, anti-ship strikes, electronic warfare — you name it. The Rafale is a fine and capable aircraft.”

He explained that while the MiG-29K was a modified land-based fighter that had technical issues initially, the Rafale-M comes fully matured and combat-tested. It’s designed for carrier operations, unlike the earlier aircraft which needed years of troubleshooting.

Why Rafale Wasn’t an Option in the 90s

Admiral Prakash reflected on the history of India’s naval fighter choices. Back in the 1990s, when India was acquiring the INS Vikramaditya (originally Russia’s Admiral Gorshkov), there were very few aircraft options that could operate from a ski-jump carrier deck.

India had considered the Rafale back then but was turned away:

“We sent a team to France to evaluate the Rafale, and they said, ‘Sorry, at this point, we cannot offer you the Rafale-M.’ The political climate also ruled out American jets like the F-18.”

That left India with a “Hobson’s choice” — the MiG-29K. It was inducted in 2013, while the Sea Harriers were retired in 2016.

How Rafale Compares to MiG-29K

Feature Rafale-M MiG-29K
Generation 4.5 4
Combat Role Multirole (air, sea, EW, etc.) Limited multirole
Electronic Systems Advanced data fusion & EW Basic electronic suite
Carrier Compatibility Fully carrier-optimized Modified land-based design
Proven in Combat Yes (e.g., French ops in Syria) Limited combat exposure

Tejas and TEDBF Still in the Pipeline

Admiral Prakash noted that the Rafale will complement India’s homegrown Tejas Naval variant, which is still undergoing sea trials. Additionally, the Navy’s next major bet is on the upcoming Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF), expected in the 2030s.

China’s Expanding Presence in Indian Ocean: Cause for Concern?

When asked about China’s growing carrier fleet and their potential deployment in the Indian Ocean, Admiral Prakash didn’t mince words:

“We haven’t seen them here yet only because they lack integral air cover. But with three carriers soon in operation, it’s just a matter of time.”

China already operates two aircraft carriers—Liaoning and Shandong—and its third, Fujian, is undergoing sea trials. Fujian is China’s largest and most advanced carrier to date. A fourth nuclear-powered one is reportedly in the works.

China’s logistical presence is growing too, with naval bases in Djibouti and access to Pakistan’s Gwadar port.

Strategic Edge: Why Aircraft Carriers Still Matter

Some military analysts argue that aircraft carriers are becoming vulnerable in modern warfare, citing incidents like:

  • Russia-Ukraine war attacks on naval ships

  • Houthi drone attacks in the Red Sea

But Admiral Prakash strongly disagrees:

“Aircraft carriers are the most protected warships—fighter cover, radars, helicopters, missile defenses—they have it all. It’s wrong logic to assume they are just sitting ducks.”

He pointed to recent events:

  • U.S. Navy aircraft carriers have been unharmed by Houthi missiles, which were intercepted.

  • During Iran’s missile strike on Israel, most missiles were shot down by American Navy ships stationed nearby.

 Rafale-M Is Just the Beginning

India’s acquisition of Rafale-M is more than just a defense upgrade—it’s a strategic signal to its adversaries. With advanced fighters, improved surveillance, and a growing domestic defense industry, the Indian Navy is entering a new era of deterrence and dominance.

While the MiG-29K was a forced compromise, Rafale-M is a calculated leap forward. With China expanding its reach, the timing of this deal couldn’t be more critical.
