Indian Student in Critical Condition After US Hit-and-Run – Family’s Heartfelt Plea Answered

Family of Comatose Indian Student Neelam Shinde Gets Emergency Visa

The United States embassy has granted an emergency visa to the family of Neelam Shinde, an Indian student who fell into a coma following a tragic road accident in California. Her family is set to fly to the US to be by her side as she fights for her life in the hospital.

What Happened to Neelam Shinde?

Neelam Shinde, a post-graduate student at California State University, was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident on February 14, 2025. The incident occurred on Fair Oaks Boulevard in Sacramento, where a vehicle struck her from behind and fled the scene. She suffered severe injuries to her head, hands, and chest, requiring emergency brain surgery. She has remained in a coma since the accident.

Family’s Emotional Journey and Visa Approval

Neelam’s father, Tanhaji Shinde, expressed gratitude after receiving the emergency visa. Speaking to the media, he shared,

“I received a phone call from her roommate on February 16, but she didn’t initially reveal the accident. Later, she informed Neelam’s uncle. She is still in a coma, though her condition has slightly improved. The US embassy granted our visas within half an hour, and we will leave tomorrow.”

Tanhaji also thanked the Indian government and Maharashtra authorities for their swift assistance.

“Both the central and Maharashtra governments helped us a lot, along with the media. We just pray that our daughter recovers soon.”

Arrest of the Hit-and-Run Driver

US authorities have arrested the suspect responsible for the accident. Sacramento police confirmed the arrest of 58-year-old Lawrence Gallows, who fled the scene after hitting Neelam. The police launched an immediate investigation and worked “around the clock” to track him down.

The hit-and-run incident was reported just before 7 PM, and when officers arrived at the scene, Gallows had already escaped. Neelam was found on the ground with critical injuries. The police eventually identified the suspect and took him into custody.

MEA and Political Intervention

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) intervened in the case after Neelam’s family urgently requested visas to travel to the US. Prominent political figures, including Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Supriya Sule, raised the issue publicly. She posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating:

“Student Neelam Shinde has met with an accident in the USA and is hospitalized in a local hospital. Her father, Tanhaji Shinde, urgently needs to visit his daughter due to a medical emergency and has applied for an urgent visa.”

Following the MEA’s involvement, the US embassy expedited the visa process, allowing the family to travel immediately.

Neelam’s Medical Condition and Road to Recovery

While Neelam’s condition remains critical, doctors have noted slight improvements. She continues to receive intensive medical care in the hospital. The coming days will be crucial in determining her recovery process.

Her case has garnered significant public attention, with many people expressing support and prayers for her well-being. The Indian community in the US has also extended help to the family during this difficult time.

This tragic incident highlights the vulnerabilities faced by international students abroad and the importance of swift government intervention during crises. With her family finally by her side, Neelam Shinde’s loved ones remain hopeful for her recovery.
