For Grace Fischer and Emma Ehrens, two seniors in high school, today is important. A new chapter in their lives is about to begin as they get ready to get their diplomas, which will signal the conclusion of their high school education. But despite their enthusiasm, they must also face a grim reality.

The names of twenty former classmates who sadly passed away years ago will be called during the graduation ceremony in addition to their own. The tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in December 2012 claimed the lives of these kids as well as six instructors, rocking the country to its core.

“It’s just going to be heartbreaking,” Grace shared with CNN, reflecting on the absence of these classmates who never had the chance to graduate alongside them. The weight of their absence is profound, a reminder of the lives cut short and the dreams left unrealized.

Emma echoed similar sentiments, expressing a mix of emotions as she anticipates the ceremony. For her, the day is not just about celebration but also about reflection. She contemplates the “what ifs” — what if those lost friends were here today, what paths would they have taken, and how different would things be?

Shootings inside schools continue to wreak havoc on communities around the country, making gun violence in the US a serious problem. The necessity for more steps to prevent catastrophes like the ones that occurred in Newtown has been further highlighted by events that occurred in Uvalde, Texas; Parkland, Florida; Nashville, Tennessee; and Santa Fe, Texas.

The Class of 2024 at Newtown High School will be poignantly honoring those who have passed away by tying green and white ribbons on their gowns. Every ribbon is inscribed with the words “Forever In Our Hearts,” paying tribute to the departed while also acting as a source of strength for the survivors who are carrying on their legacy.

The ceremony today is more than just a formal recognition of academic achievements; it is a solemn occasion of remembrance and resilience. It highlights the profound impact of gun violence on communities and schools, urging reflection on the need for meaningful action to prevent future tragedies.

Emma, Grace, and their peers stand at the cusp of adulthood with a unique perspective shaped by tragedy and resilience. As they step onto the stage to accept their diplomas, they carry with them not only their own hopes and aspirations but also the weight of remembrance for their lost friends and educators.

The “what ifs” linger in their minds, prompting deeper contemplation about the unpredictability of life and the enduring scars left by senseless violence. Despite the pain, their determination to honor the memories of their classmates and educators remains steadfast.

In honoring the memory of those who perished, the Class of 2024 pledges to advocate for change and to work towards creating safer communities. Their commitment is a testament to the power of unity and compassion in the face of adversity, offering hope for a future where tragedies like Sandy Hook become lessons learned rather than repeated.

Emma, Grace, and their classmates have a common obligation to make sure that the voices of the deceased are never forgotten as they set out on their different adventures after high school. They are the custodians of a legacy that endures beyond the confines of space and time, encouraging others to join the fight for a future in which every kid can grow, prosper, and graduate in safety and harmony.

The resiliency exhibited by the Newtown graduating class acts as a ray of hope amidst grief, serving as a constant reminder of the endurance inherent in unity and the enduring power of memory.
