From Space to Samosas – Sunita Williams’ Incredible Homecoming Story
Sunita Williams Returns to Earth After 9-Month Space Stay, Plans India Visit
Sunita Williams’ Family Celebrates Her Safe Return
Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has safely returned to Earth after an unexpected nine-month mission in space. Her family expressed immense joy, calling the moment “surreal.”
“That moment was surreal,” said her sister-in-law, Falguni Pandya, referring to the SpaceX Dragon spaceship’s safe splashdown off Florida’s coast. She also confirmed that Williams plans to visit India soon.
“We don’t have exact dates, but she’s definitely going to come to India soon. I hope this year,” Ms. Pandya added.
Deep Connection to India
Sunita Williams’ father, Deepak Pandya, hailed from Gujarat, and she has always maintained a strong bond with India. “She feels the love from India and Indians, and I know she will come back. It’s just a matter of timing, schedule, and logistics,” Ms. Pandya said.
Williams, who spent 286 days in space, is now looking forward to some quality family time. “We are also planning on going on vacation together,” Ms. Pandya revealed.
Will Sunita Williams Go to Space Again?
When asked if Sunita Williams would embark on another space journey or possibly be the first astronaut to land on Mars, Ms. Pandya responded, “That would be her choice.”
She also praised Williams for her ability to adapt to any situation. “She makes the best of every situation she is in. She is a role model for all of us,” she added.
A Sweet Connection to Home
Despite being millions of miles away, Williams remained connected to her roots. On her 59th birthday, celebrated in space on September 19, Ms. Pandya sent her Kaju Katli, a popular Indian sweet.
Williams was also thrilled when she learned that her sister-in-law was visiting the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. “She was very excited and asked me to tell her everything about it,” Ms. Pandya recalled.
A Samosa Party Awaits
Since Sunita Williams was the first astronaut to have samosas in space, her family is planning a ‘samosa party’ to celebrate her return.
The Unexpected Extended Stay in Space
Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore departed from the International Space Station (ISS) at 10:35 AM IST for a 17-hour return trip to Earth.
Originally, they were scheduled for a short mission to test Boeing’s Starliner, but a propulsion issue left the spacecraft unfit for the return journey. Instead, they were reassigned to NASA’s Crew-9 mission, which saw a Dragon spacecraft arrive in September 2023 to accommodate the stranded astronauts.
On Sunday, a relief team, Crew-10, docked at the ISS, paving the way for the long-awaited return of Williams, Wilmore, and two other astronauts – Nick Hague and Aleksandr Gorbunov.
PM Modi Invites Sunita Williams to India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially invited Sunita Williams to India.
In a letter dated March 1, PM Modi expressed his admiration for her achievements. “1.4 billion Indians have always taken great pride in your accomplishments,” he wrote.
The Prime Minister shared that he had inquired about her well-being during meetings with Donald Trump and Joe Biden during his US visits.
He also fondly recalled meeting her and her late father, Deepak Pandya, during his 2016 US visit. “Even though you are thousands of miles away, you continue to remain close to our hearts. The people of India are praying for your good health and success in your mission,” he said.
“After your return, we are looking forward to seeing you in India. It will be a pleasure for India to host one of its most illustrious daughters,” PM Modi added.
