Just a few hours after the quake in India, another quake hit Myanmar around 9:15 am local time. The epicenter was in the town of Kyaukse in central Myanmar, about 70 kilometers south of Mandalay. This quake, which had a magnitude of 4.5, was stronger than the one in India. It also hit at a relatively shallow depth of only 10 km, increasing its impact on the surrounding areas.
When tremors shook structures in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, residents took to the streets in large numbers, fearing renewed seismic activity. Like Himachal Pradesh, Myanmar is also situated in an area of intense seismic activity, and earthquakes may not be uncommon but tend to cause a high degree of worry, particularly in densely populated cities. At 9:30 am, mere 15 minutes after the Myanmar earthquake, a magnitude 4.2 quake shook portions of Tajikistan. The quake occurred in the eastern part of the nation, close to the capital city of Dushanbe, near the Tajik-Afghan border. This quake was also felt at a shallow depth of 8 km, resulting in perceptible shaking within and around Dushanbe. People emerged from houses, expecting further aftershocks. Just as before, the shallow depth of the earthquake intensified the shaking, which caused evacuation from buildings all over again. There have been past earthquakes experienced by the area, with the most recent considerable earthquake happening in 2015.
