Massive 7.7-Magnitude Earthquake in Myanmar: Tremors Felt in Kolkata, Imphal, and Bangladesh

Strong Earthquake Strikes Myanmar, Shaking Parts of India

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, sending tremors across several parts of India and Bangladesh. The quake’s epicenter was located about 50 km east of Monywa in central Myanmar. The impact was felt in Kolkata, Imphal, Meghalaya, and even as far as Dhaka and Chattogram in Bangladesh.

Tremors in Kolkata and Imphal

Residents in Kolkata and adjoining areas reported mild shaking, with many noticing their wall hangings swaying and furniture slightly moving. In Imphal, panic spread across the city, especially in Thangal Bazar, an area known for its old multi-story buildings.

Authorities confirmed that while the tremors caused alarm, no major damage or casualties were reported in either city.

Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh Also Experience Quakes

On the same day, a separate earthquake of 4.0 magnitude shook the East Garo Hills district in Meghalaya. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake struck at 1:03 PM (IST) at a depth of 5 km.

Additionally, Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh experienced a 3.5 magnitude earthquake on Thursday, recorded at 4:38 PM (IST).

Bangladesh Hit by Strong Tremors

The earthquake’s impact was also felt in Bangladesh, where major cities like Dhaka and Chattogram experienced strong tremors. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department confirmed that the earthquake hit at 12:25 PM (local time), with an epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar, close to the Bangladesh border.

USGS Reports Higher Magnitude

While the Bangladesh Meteorological Department recorded a 7.3 magnitude earthquake, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a slightly stronger 7.7 magnitude, placing the epicenter 16 km north-northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar, at a depth of 10 km.

No Casualties, But Authorities on High Alert

So far, there are no reports of casualties or severe structural damage from any of the affected areas. However, authorities in India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh remain on high alert, monitoring aftershocks and assessing potential risks.

Why South Asia is Prone to Earthquakes

The Indian subcontinent is located on the Indo-Australian tectonic plate, making it highly susceptible to earthquakes. Myanmar, being close to the plate’s boundaries, frequently experiences seismic activity that can impact neighboring countries like India and Bangladesh.

What to Do During an Earthquake?

  1. Drop, Cover, and Hold On – Get under sturdy furniture and hold on.

  2. Stay Indoors – Avoid running outside as falling debris can be dangerous.

  3. Move Away from Windows – Glass can shatter and cause injuries.

  4. If Outdoors, Stay in an Open Area – Avoid trees, buildings, and power lines.

  5. Be Prepared for Aftershocks – Strong earthquakes are often followed by smaller tremors.

This recent earthquake is a reminder of South Asia’s vulnerability to seismic activities. While no major damage has been reported, authorities urge residents in affected areas to stay alert and prepared. Scientists are continuing to monitor the region for potential aftershocks.
