Piyush Goyal: China’s Growth Based on Unfair Trade, India Ready to Turn Crisis into Opportunity

Union Minister Piyush Goyal calls for fair global trade as India and US push for a quick trade deal amid rising tariffs

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has sharply criticized China’s economic rise, accusing it of relying on unfair trade practices to fuel its growth. Speaking at the India Global Forum in New Delhi, Goyal emphasized that the world must restore balance by promoting honest pricing and fair play in global trade.

This comment comes at a time when India is navigating a shifting global trade environment, particularly after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 27% tariff on Indian goods. Rather than viewing it as a setback, Goyal believes India can leverage the disruption to boost its own industries and build stronger global partnerships.

China’s Economic Model Under Fire

“China Grew on Unfair Trade Practices,” says Goyal

While addressing global business leaders, Piyush Goyal said that China’s growth story was not built on transparent principles.

“The foundation of China’s growth was fuelled by unfair trade practices,” Goyal said.

He pointed out that pricing distortions and a lack of fair competition allowed China to dominate global trade for years. Now, as nations reconsider their trade alliances, India sees this as a chance to reset global trade norms.

India Urges Honest Trade and Values

Goyal Calls for Balance and Nationalism in Business

The minister highlighted the need for Indian businesses to put national interest and ethical practices at the heart of their strategies.

“Unless we bring in the balance of honest values, we will see the world have more instability.”

By focusing on fair pricing and transparent competition, India aims to lead by example and emerge as a reliable global trade partner.

U.S. Tariff Shock Sparks Opportunity for India

Trump’s Tariff War May Backfire as India Steps Up

On April 2, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 27% tariff on Indian imports—part of a broader set of duties targeting nearly all U.S. trading partners. This has triggered concerns across industries but also opened a strategic window for India.

Goyal stated that India is well positioned to turn this challenge into an opportunity, using the situation to promote domestic manufacturing and attract investors looking for alternatives to China.

India and U.S. Rushing to Finalize Trade Deal

Early Bilateral Trade Agreement on the Horizon

India and the U.S. have agreed to speed up talks on a bilateral trade agreement (BTA). Goyal emphasized the strong relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former U.S. President Donald Trump, suggesting that a deal could be finalized soon.

“Prime Minister Modi and President Trump are very good friends,” Goyal said, adding that both countries want an “early conclusion” to the trade pact.

In parallel, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also reaffirmed this during a recent call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

“Exchanged perspectives on Indo-Pacific, the Indian Subcontinent, Europe, Middle East/West Asia, and the Caribbean. Agreed on the importance of the early conclusion of the Bilateral Trade Agreement,” Jaishankar posted on X (formerly Twitter).

India’s Strategy: Turn Global Instability into Growth

Crisis as a Catalyst for Reform

India’s leadership is treating the current market uncertainty not as a threat, but as a chance to reform its trade practices and position itself as a dependable global partner.

“We must convert these challenges into opportunities,” Goyal urged industry leaders.

From Make in India to Atmanirbhar Bharat, these government programs now seem more timely than ever. With a focus on ethical trade, sustainability, and nationalism, India is making a pitch to global investors and trade partners alike.

 What’s at Stake for India?

New Trade Rules Could Reshape Global Supply Chains

The ongoing trade tensions between the U.S., China, and other countries have disrupted global supply chains. Many multinational companies are already looking for new sourcing hubs, and India is being seen as a top contender.

If India can finalize a trade agreement with the U.S., it will:

  • Gain greater access to American markets

  • Attract more foreign direct investment (FDI)

  • Strengthen its position in the Indo-Pacific trade bloc

  • Reduce dependency on Chinese imports

A Fairer Future for Global Trade?

Piyush Goyal’s strong comments about China and his vision for an ethical, fair-trade-driven India show a growing confidence in India’s global role. With trade deals being redrawn and old alliances tested, India has a real chance to lead with integrity and innovation.

The road ahead will require diplomacy, consistency, and a firm stand on values. But with a government that sees crisis as opportunity, and a growing manufacturing base ready to scale up, India might just be entering its most significant global trade chapter yet.
