Big Trouble for Missing MLAs! TMC’s Strict Warning Shakes Up Party
TMC to Take Strict Action Against Absentee MLAs – Party Cracks Down on Irregular Attendance!
TMC’s Warning to Lawmakers: No More Skipping Assembly Sessions!
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is cracking down on its party MLAs who have been regularly skipping West Bengal Assembly sessions without valid reasons. The party has decided to take strict disciplinary action against absentee lawmakers, reinforcing the importance of legislative responsibility.
State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay led a meeting on Monday to review attendance records, setting the stage for serious repercussions against those failing to attend sessions despite the issuance of a whip.
MLAs Under Scrutiny for Skipping Assembly
TMC’s Legislative Disciplinary Committee has summoned multiple legislators to explain their absences and has instructed them to appear in person later this week. The move comes after repeated instances where party MLAs failed to attend crucial sessions.
According to sources, three attendance registers—two for ministers and one for MLAs—are currently under scrutiny to determine the exact number of absentees, especially those who failed to notify the party about their absence.
“Some MLAs had valid reasons and informed us in advance, but others were absent without any prior notice. We are compiling a list of such legislators and will submit it to the committee for further action,” said Minister Chattopadhyay.
Why Is TMC Taking This Seriously?
The party leadership views absenteeism as a serious breach of responsibility, especially when important legislative discussions and decisions are on the line. Despite a whip being issued, many MLAs continue to skip sessions, raising concerns about their commitment.
Recent Absenteeism Issue
-
The second phase of the budget session saw a major drop in attendance.
-
TMC had issued a whip directing MLAs to attend sessions on March 19 and 20.
-
On March 19, when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was present in the Assembly, many MLAs were missing.
-
On March 20, only about 90 TMC legislators attended the session.
This lack of participation has raised alarms within the party, prompting the leadership to step in with strict measures.
Strict Disciplinary Action on the Way
The party is now in the process of identifying the absentees, with Chattopadhyay and senior TMC leaders actively monitoring attendance records. A senior leader expressed frustration over the situation, stating:
“This is nothing but an act of irresponsibility. Despite issuing a whip, several MLAs are skipping assembly sessions. The party has decided to take firm action against them.”
The disciplinary committee is expected to issue warnings, impose penalties, or even take severe action against repeat offenders to ensure legislators prioritize their duties.
Will This Move Improve Discipline?
TMC’s decision to take action is aimed at setting an example for lawmakers who take their legislative responsibilities lightly. Party insiders suggest that disciplinary measures will include:
. Official Summons – MLAs will be required to explain their absence in front of the disciplinary committee.
. Strict Monitoring – Attendance records will be closely tracked in future sessions.
. Possible Punishments – Persistent absenteeism may result in party action, including suspensions or restrictions on party privileges.
This action underscores the TMC’s commitment to governance and discipline, ensuring lawmakers are present to debate and pass critical policies for the state.
A Wake-Up Call for TMC MLAs
With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approaching, the TMC leadership cannot afford laxity within its ranks. The party’s latest move sends a strong message to its MLAs—show up, participate, or face consequences.
Will this stern approach bring discipline back to the assembly? Only time will tell. But for now, absentee MLAs are in big trouble
