Amit Shah Inaugurates First Phase of Revamped Police Academy in Assam
Golaghat, Assam – Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the first phase of the newly revamped Lachit Barphukan Police Academy at Dergaon in Assam’s Golaghat district on Saturday. Alongside the inauguration, he also laid the foundation stone for the next phase of development, marking a major step in modernizing police training infrastructure in the state.
A State-of-the-Art Police Academy
Spread across 340 acres, the academy is being upgraded with cutting-edge facilities at an estimated cost of ₹1,024 crore in two phases. The first phase, built at a cost of ₹167.4 crore, features:
- Five-story main building with smart classrooms
- Weapon training stimulator for real-world combat scenarios
- Advanced research labs and administrative offices
- A modern parade ground and police museum
Smart Classrooms and High-Tech Training
The interactive smart classrooms come equipped with digital boards and personal computers, providing trainees with advanced learning tools. The academy also boasts a library, computer labs, and seminar rooms, ensuring that recruits receive comprehensive theoretical training alongside practical experience.
Weapon Training Simulator: A Game-Changer
One of the key highlights of the academy is the weapon training simulator, designed to provide police personnel with a safe, cost-effective, and risk-free training environment. The simulator can adapt to multiple firearms, allowing trainees to:
- Develop shooting accuracy
- Enhance tactical decision-making
- Prepare for real-life combat situations
Leaders at the Event
Amit Shah was accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, among other dignitaries. During his visit, DGP Harmeet Singh briefed Shah on the academy’s facilities before taking him on a tour of the newly developed infrastructure.
Phase Two: Expanding Housing and Facilities
The second phase of the project, estimated at ₹425.48 crore, will focus on expanding residential and training infrastructure. The development plan includes:
- Housing quarters for 240 families
- Hostels accommodating 312 officers/personnel
- Dormitories for 2,640 trainees

“This modern infrastructure is designed to seamlessly integrate theoretical and practical aspects of police training,” an official stated. The upgraded academy is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency, preparedness, and skillset of Assam’s police force, making it one of the most advanced training institutes in India.
