5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Bay of Bengal: Did You Feel the Tremors in Kolkata

Kolkata Earthquake: 5.1 Magnitude Quake Strikes Bay of Bengal, Tremors Felt in Kolkata

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 shook the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday morning, sending tremors throughout Kolkata and several areas of West Bengal. Though the quake was felt across the region, there were no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties.

5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Bay of Bengal

Tremors Felt Across Kolkata and West Bengal
At 6:10 AM on Tuesday, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal, causing tremors in Kolkata and nearby regions. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred near the coast of Odisha, specifically near Puri.

The tremor, which was recorded at a depth of 91 kilometers, was felt by residents of Kolkata, causing a brief moment of panic. Social media users quickly took to platforms like Twitter and X (formerly known as Twitter) to report their experiences and share information about the quake.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located at a latitude of 19.52° N and longitude 88.55° E, in the Bay of Bengal, around 175 kilometers from Odisha.

Social Media Reactions
As the tremors rattled the region, many Kolkata residents expressed their shock and concern on social media platforms. Several posts mentioned the sudden jolts they felt early in the morning, with hashtags related to the earthquake trending for a brief period.

One user on X posted, “Earthquake Alert! Received a Google Earthquake Alert at around 6:10 AM in Kolkata. Reports suggest the epicenter might be 175 km from Orissa. Did anyone else feel the tremors? Awaiting official confirmation. Stay alert and stay safe!”

Another user shared, “Earthquake in Kolkata! 5.3 magnitude. Just felt and posting cause awake.”

Kolkata’s Seismic Activity and Risk Levels

Kolkata’s Position in Seismic Zone III
Kolkata lies in Seismic Zone III, an area that faces moderate seismic risk. While it’s not as earthquake-prone as regions like Northeast India, the Himalayas, or Gujarat, the city does experience occasional tremors. These typically occur due to seismic activity in nearby regions such as the Bay of Bengal, Nepal, or North-East India.

It’s important to note that while Kolkata is not situated on major fault lines, it still remains vulnerable to earthquakes originating from the Bay of Bengal and surrounding regions. This recent quake serves as a reminder of the occasional seismic activity that can impact the city.

Previous Earthquake History
Kolkata has experienced other earthquakes in the past, although they have typically been of lower magnitude. Despite being situated in a moderate-risk seismic zone, the city has not faced major earthquakes in recent decades. Nevertheless, the residents remain cautious and prepared for such events, especially when seismic activity is detected in neighboring regions.

Earthquake Details and Impact

What We Know About the February 25, 2025, Earthquake
The earthquake hit the Bay of Bengal at precisely 6:10 AM IST. The tremor’s magnitude of 5.1 was sufficient to be felt in Kolkata, though it didn’t cause major destruction. The quake’s depth of 91 kilometers, while deep, still managed to send shockwaves through Kolkata and the surrounding areas.

The tremor lasted only a few seconds, but it was enough to send people into a temporary state of panic. However, no reports of significant damage or injuries have emerged as of yet.

The National Center for Seismology confirmed the earthquake details in a post:
“EQ of M: 5.1, On: 25/02/2025 06:10:25 IST, Lat: 19.52 N, Long: 88.55 E, Depth: 91 Km, Location: Bay of Bengal,” the NCS posted on X.

Other Recent Earthquake Incidents

Himachal Pradesh Earthquake
This recent earthquake in Kolkata was not the only seismic activity in India. Earlier on Sunday, a 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh. Though the tremors were felt in parts of the district, no significant damage or casualties were reported.

The earthquake in Himachal Pradesh occurred at 8:42 AM, with the epicenter located in the Kiargi region of Sundernagar. This area falls under Seismic Zone V, which is known for its high-damage risk in the event of an earthquake. Fortunately, the tremors caused minimal disruption.

Preparedness for Future Earthquakes

Kolkata’s Preparedness for Earthquakes
While Kolkata is not as vulnerable to major earthquakes as some other parts of India, it is crucial for residents and authorities to remain prepared for seismic events. Earthquakes, though rare, are a reminder that preparedness is key to reducing potential risks.

To enhance earthquake readiness, city officials and residents can focus on:

  1. Strengthening infrastructure to withstand seismic shocks.
  2. Raising awareness about earthquake preparedness in the community.
  3. Creating emergency response plans for residents to follow in the event of strong tremors or earthquakes.

Residents of Kolkata can also stay updated on earthquake alerts and other warnings through local authorities, social media channels, and apps that provide real-time notifications.

What Should You Do During an Earthquake?

Stay Calm and Follow Safety Protocols
If you experience an earthquake, it’s important to stay calm and follow these safety tips:

  • Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Get down to your hands and knees, protect your head, and take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture.
  • Stay Indoors: Avoid running outside during the tremors as falling debris can be a major risk.
  • Stay Away from Windows: Glass can shatter during an earthquake, posing serious injury risks.
  • Have an Emergency Kit: Make sure you have basic supplies, including water, food, and a first aid kit, in case of an emergency.
