A batch of rare and never-before-seen photographs of Prince has been released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of his iconic album, “Purple Rain.” Sonic Editions announced the release earlier this week, coinciding with what would have been Prince’s 66th birthday on June 7. The photo collection includes limited-edition prints of not only Prince but also other legendary music stars like Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Aerosmith, Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur, and Bruce Springsteen.
Prince’s “Purple Rain” album, released on June 25, 1984, marked several significant milestones in his career. It was his first album to top the Billboard 200 chart, where it remained for an impressive 24 weeks. The album was certified 13x platinum by the RIAA and sold over 25 million copies worldwide. It produced several timeless tracks, including “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” “I Would Die for You,” and the title track “Purple Rain.”

The newly released photographs by Sonic Editions come in various sizes and price ranges. Small prints measuring 14 x 11 inches are priced between $149 and $499. Medium prints, which are 20 x 16 inches, and large prints at 24 x 20 inches fall within this price range. For those interested in even larger prints, the XL and XXL sizes, measuring 20 x 16 inches and 37 x 26 inches, are available, with prices ranging from $699 to $1,199.
The release of these rare photographs is part of a broader effort to honor Prince’s legacy. In addition to the photo collection, a musical tribute is scheduled to take place at Prince’s Paisley Park home from June 20-24. This annual celebration will feature performances by The Revolution – Wendy, Lisa, Bobby Z, Brownmark, and Dr. Fink – who will take the stage to commemorate the 40th anniversary of “Purple Rain.” Morris Day, who appeared in the original “Purple Rain” film, is also set to perform along with New Power Generation. The event promises to be a vibrant homage to Prince, including a block party in downtown Minneapolis on June 22, themed panels, DJ dance parties, film screenings from the “Purple Rain” era, and other surprises yet to be announced.
“Purple Rain” is not only a landmark in Prince’s career but also in music history. It won a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and received multiple Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. The accompanying musical film, released on July 27, 1984, won an Oscar for Best Original Song Score, further cementing the cultural impact of “Purple Rain.”
Prince’s influence on music and popular culture continues to resonate, as evidenced by the ongoing tributes and the release of these rare photographs. Fans and collectors have a unique opportunity to own a piece of this legacy through Sonic Editions’ limited-edition prints. The celebration at Paisley Park is a testament to the enduring love and admiration for Prince and his work, offering a chance for fans to come together and celebrate the life and music of this extraordinary artist.
The 40th anniversary of “Purple Rain” is a significant milestone, commemorating not only the album’s release but also Prince’s enduring legacy. The combination of the photo collection and the musical tribute at Paisley Park encapsulates the timeless influence of Prince, ensuring that his contributions to music and culture are remembered and celebrated by future generations.
