There was a time when I believed that my childhood friends are my lifetime friends. They would stay with me forever. But there is a subtle but powerful truth that we learn and understand through experience.
Initially, when someone pushes you to do better, it feels good… it feels genuine. They will guide you and even be chuffed and celebrate your small wins. When you perform slightly better than them, they will be delighted. But the moment your growth begins to outpace them significantly, you will observe a major shift in them. Their tone, behavior, enthusiasm, and presence will be different. There presence no longer felt the same. Conversations became less warm. In the beginning I wondered if I was overthinking. But deep inside , I could feel that something has changed.
Understanding the Shift
This shift comes from many areas …. jealousy, insecurity, comparison, or their own struggles.
Reasons may differ from person to person, but if you feel this way at any point with anyone, it means your journey with that person has only taken you this far. It’s time to drift. Because it can disturb the balance of the relationship. What was once equal now feels unequal. Some people are happy to see your growth. Others tolerate it. And few feel threatened by it. It’s crucial to understand and recognize this difference.
Energy Never Lies
It is not always necessary to understand people in the world. Their energy speaks first. You will feel a sudden energy shift in them. You may observe subtle criticism, distance, lack of genuine happiness for your success. It’s important to be aware of these signals.
When it’s Time to Drift
Not all friends and relationships are meant to last. Some people are in your life for a phase… a chapter…not the entire story.
If someone makes you feel heavy, it simply means that their journey with you has reached its natural end. It doesn’t mean disrespect. You also need not feel guilty about it.
It means you have chosen growth, and growth demands distance. If a friendship or relationship is disturbing your inner balance …. create distance. Here, you are only protecting your peace of mind. In this way, you are creating an environment that supports your calm rather than challenging you.
Here, the truth is simple:
You can’t progress in an environment where your growth makes others restless.
The Real Test of People
You can judge a person in two situations:
- When you are struggling
- When you are rising beyond expectations.
Some will vanish when you fall. Others will vanish when you rise.
In both cases, life gives you a chance to filter people and make your inner circle.
In my childhood, I used to believe that all my friends were lifelong companions. But later I realized that not all friends who start with you are meant to finish with you.
And that’s alignment…..
An act of self-respect and evolution.
