In a recent interview at SCREEN LIVE in Mumbai, Jimmy Shergill opened up about his unforgettable experience working with Bollywood legends Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan in the iconic film Mohabbatein. The actor, who will soon be seen in Neeraj Pandey’s upcoming film Sikandar Ka Muqaddar, reminisced about his early days in the industry and the joy of sharing screen space with such stalwarts. Here’s a look back at those memorable moments and some fun behind-the-scenes stories.
Jimmy Shergill’s Journey: From Maachis to Mohabbatein
Before landing his role in Aditya Chopra’s Mohabbatein, Jimmy Shergill had just wrapped up his work in the critically acclaimed film Maachis, directed by Gulzar. Little did he know that a major opportunity was coming his way. When he was selected for Mohabbatein, a film starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and a talented ensemble cast, he couldn’t believe his luck. Jimmy recalls, “I was over the moon when I was selected for this film. Imagine being chosen to share screen space with such giants of the industry.”
When asked how he felt about working alongside two of the biggest stars in Bollywood, he candidly admitted, “What was I not thinking! I felt like I must have done some really good deeds in my life to be here, standing next to these legends. And honestly, even if they fired me after a few scenes, I would have been okay!” He joked that his only regret was not taking a picture with them at the time, something many fans would probably love to see.
The First Meeting with Amitabh Bachchan
One of the most heartwarming moments Jimmy shared was his first meeting with Amitabh Bachchan. This took place at a pooja ceremony at the late Yash Chopra’s house, just before shooting for Mohabbatein began. As the story goes, Aditya Chopra, the director of the film, introduced Jimmy to Mr. Bachchan. What happened next was something Jimmy will never forget.
Jimmy remembers, “A couple of days before the pooja, I had injured my hand badly, so I had it wrapped in a bandage. When Adi introduced me to Mr. Bachchan, he looked at my hand and said, ‘He’s a method actor, taking his role a bit too seriously, I think!’” Jimmy laughs as he recalls how Mr. Bachchan quickly picked up on the fact that his character, Karan, repeatedly injures his hand in the film to impress Preeti, played by Aishwarya Rai.
The actor fondly recalls the moment as one of his most cherished memories from the Mohabbatein shoot. “It was a joke from Mr. Bachchan, but it stuck with me. His sense of humor was so sharp and quick, and it made me feel welcome in a way that only someone like him could.”
Shah Rukh Khan’s Support and Guidance
Another standout memory for Jimmy was the immense support he received from Shah Rukh Khan during the Mohabbatein shoot. Jimmy recalled how SRK was extremely helpful and always made him feel at ease, especially in such a high-pressure environment. “Shah Rukh was not just a co-actor; he was a huge source of inspiration. He was always ready to help, whether it was on set or off. Even today, he continues to be a source of inspiration for me,” Jimmy said.
This bond and respect for SRK have remained strong over the years, and Jimmy credits much of his success to the lessons and encouragement he received from the superstar. For Jimmy, Shah Rukh Khan’s kindness and professionalism left a lasting impact on him, one he continues to carry with him throughout his career.
Mohabbatein – A Legendary Film with an Ensemble Cast
Released in 2000, Mohabbatein was a landmark film in Bollywood. Directed by Aditya Chopra, it not only starred Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan but also had an incredible supporting cast, including Uday Chopra, Shamita Shetty, Jugal Hansraj, Kim Sharma, and Preeti Jhangiani. The film’s story, centered around love, tradition, and rebellion, struck a chord with audiences across generations, and Jimmy Shergill’s portrayal of Karan became a key part of the film’s success.
While Mohabbatein will always be remembered for its iconic performances, Jimmy Shergill’s role as Karan, a character who defies his conservative father to pursue his love, was an integral part of the film’s emotional depth.
